The place for you to show off your licks, as inspired by various CR artists. Or, a lick that you just feel would happen to fit well in a song from that era.

The Rules

1. Always post a lick! Even if you want to comment on another guy's lick. I can't personally enforce this, but please follow it. (edit: I'll consider removing this rule, provided enough people post licks normally)
2. Post using code. Makes everybody's life easier.

3. Check your post: odds are your tab isn't lined up quite right at first.

4. Try to provide some kind of background/context for your lick. What chord you picture it being played over, who inspired it, etc.

5. Unless there's an overwhelming majority who desire otherwise, I think it should be all licks that YOU have written. It doesn't take any creativity to cut and paste tabs! If you happen to really see a lick that you want to post, exercise your musical mind and make it yours somehow.

6. You can request a type of lick, if you post one. Provided you follow the rules, there's no reason why you can't ask for some ideas.

7. Don't post Guitar Pro or Powertabs ONLY. You can post them, but not everyone has these programs: post tab too. Some people take pictures of those tabs and link to the tabs; if you can do this, you don't need tab.

I'll start off with this Mark Knopfler inspired lick:

 T i m i T i m i T i m i T
--------7---------------7--------------------------------
------7---10p7-----10p7---10p7---------7-----------------
-9b11-----------9---------------9-9p7----9p7-------------
---------------------------------------------9-----------
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------

It's in 4/4 time, with all notes being 16th triplets except the very for the very first note, which is a grace note. I like Knopfler's style, but I wanted a lick that could be played using 16th note triplets at a slower tempo. I use my fingers for the lick: T for thumb, i for index and m for middle, although it could be played using hybrid picking.

That's a cool riff. Everyone enjoy this thread, hopefully it'll help you with your stuff. But I'd like to reinstate guys, Psycodelia is gonna watch to see how many people actually post licks. You guys can post without licks, just so long as that isn't all you do is talk to each other. You should see on average about one lick ever lets say 5 posts. That's a minimum. Guys try to respect that please.

Here is a cool riff that I use when playing the blues. The notes used (in order) are:
G-E-D#-D-C-A.

e|-15-12------------|
B|-------16-15-13---|
G|---------------14-|
D|------------------|
A|------------------|
E|------------------|

This riff is played in the fourth form of the pentatonic scale. It is also a form of the natural minor scale, but I people are more familiar with the pentatonic shape. So we will call the notes used in this one color notes that are not in you pentatonic scale. It uses a tritone, which is the D# note on the 16th fret of the B-string. The tritone, if you don't know, is the half step that lies between the 4 and the 5. It can be called a sharp fourth or a flatted fifth (augmented or diminished).

This one is also in the Am scale. It uses the same notes, but in a different spot on the neck, and they are lower in tone. The notes used here, in order as the last set, are:
D-C-A-G-E-D#-D-C-A. The riff leaves out the F and the B notes, just to keep the instructional kind of thing going. But here is the riff:

e|-10-8-----------------|
B|-------10-8-----------|
G|-------------9-8-7-5--|
D|--------------------7-|
A|----------------------|
E|----------------------|

The reason that I stop on the 7th fret, is because it is an A. That's a minor root, and we're in Am for this riff, so it seems appropriate to end on it. But obviosly you can do whatever you want. This is just something I do. It is meant to help you guys out with soloing, inspire some ideas, whatever you're looking to achieve with it. I hope that you do achieve the goal that you have with these two riffs. I will post more over time. But this is just a starter thing.

As I said above, enjoy the riffs and thread.

Alright, I'll rearrange it and get some rules... if you want to suggest a few, go right ahead

so I don't break my own rules...

    s s s s s s s s 3x s s s s s s s s e s q
|---------------------|-------------------------|
|---------------------|-------------------------|
|-o-4-2p0---2p0---0-o-|-4-2p0----------------2--|
|-o-------4-----4---o-|-------4-2p0----------2--|
|---------------------|-------------4-2p0--0-0--|
|---------------------|-------------------------|

Jimmy Page country-rockish... works over either a G followed by an A or just a straight A chord. For flavor some chromatics could be added. (In case anyone's wondering, the two "o"s mean repeat. s=sixteenth, e=eighth, q=quarter note.

--0--------------|----0---------------|

In 3/4 Time. Repeat the first one once, then move two the second measure and repeat it once. Then repeat the whole thing. All hammer-ons and pull-offs are eighth notes and the others are quarter notes. About 180 bpm. Inspired by Jimmy Page, particularly the song How Many More Times Enjoy!

Another very commonly used lick, by probably everyone, is this:

e|---------------------8b10--|
B|-------8-----8-----8-------|
G|---7b9---7b9---7b9---------|
D|---------------------------|
A|---------------------------|
E|---------------------------|

This lick is in Am Pentatonic. It's obviously applicable to any spot on the neck, on any two strings. You just make sure that the notes being bent to are only a whole step (2 frets) away though. That will make this easier to play. Make sure to have vibrato held on that last note that is bent.

You said lick/riff so i decided to post a riff...

---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---2---2----2-2------------------------------------------------------
---0---0----0-0----/7-6-5-----5---5----5-5-----2---------------------
------------------------------3---3----3-3-----0------/7-6-----------

A Sabbathy type song, really slow and doomish maybe 60 bpm. The chords and notes are sequenced: quarter, quarter, quarter, eighteenth, Q., E., Q.

Btw, how do you guys write your tabs so well? PT?

I'll post a tab later, but what I recommend doing, if you haven't already, when submitting a tab...

Go to the Submit Tab on the UG HomePage, and use the Guitar Tab Format that is available.

Copy-paste it to Word, and set it in Point 8 Font on the standard style of writing you're given.

From there, just delete one "-" every time you add a number/symbol to a line, and at the end it should be lined up.

Cool, thanks it helped a lot both of you.

This is a riff that a lot of my other riffs are modeled from...

NOTE: The "muffled strings" aren't played with much force at all, it's only emphasizing to use percussion before striking the E note.

*NOTE - I don't have my guitar in front of me at the moment, so it is very possible, and likely, that I made a mistake. I may come back and revise this if I find such circumstances have taken place.*

Anyways, this lick is very heavily influenced by Duane Allman, and I came up with it as a good introduction to the solo during the song, "You Don't Love Me".

This particular lick is based off of the Blues Scale in the Key of A.

This is a lick that I use that I just figured out tonight. I was playing and trying to figure out how to achieve a certain sound. I call it an illusion riff, because if performed right, it gives the illusion that every note is played on one string. Distortion helps (obviously). It is actually the same lick that Jimmy Page plays at the end of Stairway to Heavens' solo. I figured it out purely by accident though. The difference between the two is however that in Stairway to Heaven Jimmy uses a pull off, I don't do that. I pick each note, but you could use a pull off. In any case, it deserves to be posted because it sounds great.

e|-11-9---11-9----11-9----11-9----11b13---|
B|------9------9-------9-------9----------|
G|----------------------------------------|
D|----------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------|

I used the key of C-minor Pentatonic for this. You can play it anywhere on the neck though. It uses the first form of the pentatonic scale. Make sure you play it fast enough to sound as though it is all on one string but not so fast that it is sloppy and bad sounding. If done right you can make it sound like one string, very clean. I'd practice it without an amp before using distortion so that you can make every note clean. Anyway, sorry Jimmy Page for using your lick, but I found it by accident. Enjoy all UGers, and please try to do something of your own with it. When I used it tonight, for the short period of time that I did for, I didn't sound like I was playing Stairway to Heaven, it's all about the feel that you use. Keep that in mind.

The first is 4/4 time.

The second one is 3/4 time with the first two notes, 7 and 8 being 16th notes. I think it's right but the notes should play themselves, if I wrote the timing wrong a bit wrong.

A Zep-type riff I use with my band, pretty kickass when played with the rest of the band. 4/4 time, key of E give it about 120 bpm.

Here is a Rush inspired lick for you guys. I don't really like it but maybe one of you will, who knows. Anyway, thought I'd post it for you.

e[----------------------------]
B[----------------------------]
G[--6---------0--6--------0---]
D[-----7--9---------7--9------]

This riff is based on the A-major scale, Ionian Mode. Anyway say all notes are eigth notes here. It's in 4/4. I suck with sheet so that's just gonna have to do I guess. Sorry that I'm not more helpful with the timing guys. Anyway, enjoy the lick.

I have kind of "stolen" this lick and made it my own, which is half of the spirit of this thread. Anyway, I repeat those first few notes, the first 3 notes that you pick, for about a bar, two bars, whatever feels like it's the proper amount of time to me. It's a great lick, and I thank you for posting it.

Edit: I found something here that would largely benefit the thread (assuming it stays alive) in another forum (Tab Talk), and feel like it should go into the first post of this one. So Psychodelia, it's obviously up to you, but it may help, here it is:

How to code tabs on this forum

If you've tried posting tabs in a thread you may've found that they come out slightly odd, like.....

|-------3-3-3-------5--
|-------3-3-3-------6--
|-------4-4-4-------7--
|-------5-5-5-7-7-7-7--
|-------5-5-5-5-5-5-5--
|-3-3-3-3-3-3----------

.. when really it should look like....

|-------3-3-3-------5--
|-------3-3-3-------6--
|-------4-4-4-------7--
|-------5-5-5-7-7-7-7--
|-------5-5-5-5-5-5-5--
|-3-3-3-3-3-3----------

What you need to do to your tab is to code it. To do this, firstly write your tab in something like notepad, or Courier New font in Microsoft word (these are fonts that use the same width for each character) and then simply cut and paste, and place
 infront of the tab and
at the end of the tab (take away the spaces in the box for it to work) and your tab will be shown lined up.

So we could maybe add this at the top?
