ok....

An amp consists of 3 things...

your guitar signal goes into a preamp, which boosts the signal to line level and colors it a bit.

then the poweramp (which needs a line level signal to work correctly) amplifys it, and puts it out to a speaker.

A combo has all 3 parts, where a head only has the pre and power. You still need a cab to get sound, and keep your head running good, otherwise it'll "KABOOM" (well that may be exagerrated, but....)
