A strat gets you about everywhere. Also Les Pauls do the trick. Just your ordinary guitars.

les pauls in my opinion are the most versitile, edwards makes some nice ones in your price range

I've also heard wonders coming from the Gibson Explorer, and it's cheaper. Enough money to buy some accessories. =)
