Just a good american strat will get you a long ways. Such a classic guitar.

I'm not sure, but I believe that a fat strat would be more versatile.

you could save a little more and go for the Eric Johnson strat which is supposed to be very good

I personally love my Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Signature Made In Japan Stratocaster.

The made in japan yngwies are built differently than the current american made versions and, in my opinion, they sound better. You have to try and find one on E-bay. I paid 800 for mine and it was worth every penny. Nice hot stacked single coil pick-ups to get heavier tones from.
