kinna but not really
a good example of basses that have growl are Warwicks
you can hear it in many Story of the year songs
its got a dirty, tinny, chunky sound to it
theres like 5 types of sounds in my mind for bass
Boomy
Punky
Funky
Growly
Trebely (I cant think of anoter way to describe it)
so growl is distinct, but off of a P-bass the growl is light but very prominet over the other 5 types so thats my two cents.. i hope it makes sense

heres a video with teh Warwick growl

it starts when the songs gets going!
you can here the bass growling through!

I always thought Geddy Lee (Rush), Tim C (RATM/Audioslave) and Billy Gould (Faith No More) had pretty growly tones.

Here's a vid of FNM.. at around 1:20 is where the bass starts

And Geddy Lee.. with the tone of gods. I don't usually like Rush, but this is awesome:

But then, Jazz pickups are the ones that have the "growl" sound right? What bass was he using anyway? (Flea)

Flea has used a modulus, but isn't the Jazz he used a '64? or am i wrong?

It's something like that, and isn't it like a really rare shell pink colour? And I love the S-1 switching system on my bass, transforms it completely

His main bass is a ’61 Fender Jazz Bass in Shell Pink, the rarest of Fender custom finishes. It may in fact be the only Shell Pink ’61 J in existence, and as such, this instrument would command well over $35,000 on the vintage instrument market.

There we go. $35,000!
