im about to rebuild in a sense my old ibanez. im completely hollowing out the back for some circuitry and new pickups but i dont wanna have to re paint it. its a gloss black that shines like a bitch when its clean and i dont wanna ruin it.

got any suggestions on how to rout it and cut it so it wont chip. i was thinking to use a Stanley knife and cut the enamel so when i cut it cuts along the groove

any help will great thanks

You could do that, then put good quality masking tape over the groove. That ought to do the trick.
