I've got a spare AU$1000 or around that, I'm not rich, I just WORK, unlike most UG'ers
But yeah, should I get a 7-string? I play alot of Dropped-D songs, and to those who own one, does it interfere much in those songs?

Oh, I forgot to mention, there is a chance I'll get one with a Floyd Rose / Kahler

i'd assume a 6-string would be easier for drop-d just because there isnt another string in the way, but you should try playing a 7-string somewhere, drop the E and see if you can still play it comfortably (can't think of a reason you wouldn't be asble to)

What practical use do you have for a seven string?

For all those times when six strings isnt enough.

well, Dropped-A is a good reason
I'm a death-metalhead, who still plays Iron Maiden, etc.
It's a problem
But alas, I always use 10-52's now, I love them.
They don't hold A too well

ok then, to all those who DO own a 7-string, what is the average gauge?
I'm quite curious. The 'average' guage for the 1st 6 strings is 10 - 46.
So, would the average B string be around .58?

Buy it.

If you have the money and you want it just buy it. Make yourself happy.

Yes, buy one. You obviously already have a six string right? If it's a good one, buy a 7-string, so at least you'll have both.

The average B string guage, I believe, is .56.
Get the seven-string, they're awesome (just got one for Christmas).
Be careful when choosing though...I'd stay away from sig guitars if I were you (Ibanez K-7...).

I need a sig. :O!

7 strings pwn, I have a Rhoads style V from Halo, and an Ibanez 7321, personally, I'd go with Ibanez, they make very good 7 strings at a good price.

.56 is the normal B string gauge, you can do drop D with it, but that might be better on a 6.
I play a lot of death metal and whatever the hell floats my boat. They're good for extra range and stuff. My ibanez has bass strings on it, tuned to F. You can even put a high A string on your 7 instead of a low B, it's whatever you want it to be for really.

Buy a 7 string and then you can play Nevermore and Dream Theater songs.

I don't think you can get a 7-string in AUS for $1000 with a floyed unless it second hand. you can try a fixed bridge ibanez its about 800-900 i think its a rg7321. i don't think it will interfere with your playing unless you have really small hands or like to hold your guitar low. the one thing i did notice when playing a 7 is you have more string to mute.

you say it as if it is an easy thing to do

but yeah 7 strings kick ass. play tuned 1 step down. it'll sound so good that you'll cream yourself.
