is there a major difference between the TS808 and the TS9? other than one is vintage sounding. but is there a huge tonal quality difference?

They are both vintage sounding. The 808 sounds a bit different but the cost isn't worth the difference. A Maxon or a modded TS-9 are good choices.

Anything with that pad kind of switch instead of the button-style is not true bypass.

Go with the one you like better. I bought my TS808 off eBay, I'm very satisfied with the pedal AND what I paid. You can find both the Maxon and Ibanez versions there.
You Don't Need a halfstack.

You Don't Need 100W.
