Hello people of UG! Well the long search for my amp is over. I was heartset on a stack until I realised the volume would be too much and Itd never go in the car... So the DSL. Ive tryed one out a while back and loved the clean sound and that crunchy distortion when you roll back the gain. So, has anyone got one of these and can tell me more about it? Cheers - I dont want any more suggestions, Ive decided on this

Nice choice, iv got one myself and couldnt be happier with it. What styles do you play?

Im a Red Hot Chili Peppers man (you may have guess from the screen name lol). I also like funk and progressive rock but hate mainstream "punk pop" like MCR. So RHCP, Funkadelic, The Mars Volta, James Brown, Iggy Pop and some jazz. How loud is the DSL?

cool, should suit you quite well then. 40watt tube is VERY loud. Iv played medium sized gigs (200ish) people with it unmicd and had plenty of volume left

this is pretty much just a copied and pasted post i made in the gg&a forums but what the hell

"They're pretty good amps, especially for the price.

ive had no problems with mine, and it gets frequent use although ive never gigged with it so i cant say anything about how well it would stand up to a stage enviroment. that being said some people have said they've had problems with it overheating which is again a problem i havent had, but a fan at the back of the amp will fix it anyway.

as far as tone goes the 401 is a lot more versatile than some will tell you just so long as you dont mind doing some tweaking, im not a big fan of scooped mids and in my experience the amp doesnt work well with that kindof set up, but then you actually lose a lot of your sound removing the mids anyway.

the amp can get some great metal sounds using the second overdrive channel, more modern metal although it does have some oldschool tones in there, again you just have to tweak, the cleans from it are crystal clear and cranking the gain on the clean channel, or using a light setting on the first overdrive channel will open up some great bluesy tones, light gain with clean can give you some nice jazzy, and even classical tones aswell.

for what its worth i find i get nice cleans with these settings treble 8, mids 10, bass 3 and the gain at about 3-4.

and the overdrive setting ive got right now has, treble 9, mids 7, bass 4 and the gain cranked right up."

DSL401 = Great amps from what i've heard, and the reviews I've read. The distortion is meant to be awesome, and some nice cleans too. Nice choice of amp.

I'm no expert on tubes, but you can get groove tubes for like...20-30 bucks?

The only thing i don't like about it is that its a 1x12 and not 2x12.

I bought a used DSL401 a few months ago and I'm in love with it. I simply can't find any flaws. Awesome cleans, great distortion as well. I recently stopped using the OD/2 channel and starting using the OD/1 with an overdrive pedal. If you don't have an overdrive pedal the OD/2 will give you all the gain you need, but if you want to get that vintage crunch the OD/1 is your best friend.
Congratulations on your choice.

Guitars:
Schecter Hellraiser Tempest Left Handed
Yamaha FG720SL Acoustic
Amp(s):
Fender Blues Junior (needs new tubes )
Guitar Rig 4, if that counts

The JCM800 is a lot better, but I wanna get more effects etc. and a half stack is way to big for me.

if you do some searching you could find a jcm800 combo used. ive no idea how that compares to the halfstack version but i know they used to make combo versions too.

Cleans aren't very good from the DSL, the OD is nice though.
