I'm building a speaker cab for my valve junior and i have two cheap speakers from old fender slid state combos and i wanted to cut them for a more off beat distortion. I was wondering if anyone had tried this or new anything about it.

It's what people used to do years ago in an attempt to get distortion when there were few pedals available and what was available was too expensive for your average player - nowadays it's a stupid thing to do and all you'll usually end up doing is ruining your amp.

How do you ruin your amp by cutting speaker cones? It doesnt effect the current flowing through. I can't imaginie blowing a transformer because of a little tear in some paper. Is it really stupid to try to come up with interesting sounds?

yeah, I meant ruining your amp as in the speakers. The Kinks only did it because there were so few options for distortion at that time - that problem thankfully no longer exists!

It doesn't give you "interesting" sounds, it was just a way of making do.

But, if you've got some crap speaker. Not an unwanted one, that might be useful later, but something otherwise useless, try it.

I dont know. Im awfuly fond of Dave Davies distortion. I consider it an interesting sound in relation to say fuzz used by Clapton or Hendrix or distotion in a more modern sense such as Metallica or Mastodon. It is deffenitely different, and different is interesting.

If you've got other speakers/another cab, sure, do it. Would be interesting.

Thats the thing. I do have theese extra speakers just laying around the house. They dont sound good to begin with. So why not have some sense of adventure in the name of rock and roll.

Go for it. Clips later of course?

i head some where that he also jammed knitting needeles and stuff into them, to **** them up more, but yeah,. try it if you have no use for them, just dont cut them too much, or they probobaly wont even sound. make a cut, test it, turn off the amp, un plug it, make another cut, test it, turn off the amp, unplug it,(for safety!!!) until you find a nice fuzzy sound

ya thats hat im thinking. i heard about him sticking needles into the speeker cone to. i dont know if im going to go that far, but does anyone have any ideas as to what direction to cut. Oh, there will most deffenitely be clips, but not for another month til im off on spring break. I'm just planning ahead.

Link Wray did this first, and he did it by poking holes (notice the plural) in the cone with a pencil. Dave Davies did it with either a knitting needle or a knife (accounts differ). They both poked holes rather than cut holes though.

"...After plugging, unplugging and switching chords, he slashed the amplifier's speaker cone with a razor blade. He finally got what he wanted: a crackling, distorted guitar sound...." (http://pauseandplay.com/davedavies.htm)
Interview with Dave Davies. Sounds like a little bit more than poking holes.

I have considered it, but I almost always end up not doing irreversible stuff...

Seems to me most superior sonic qualities of the speaker would be basically gone after you rip it up, so you might as well go for a really cheap one and give it a shot.

The stuff that makes a good speaker sound good. In other words, it's gonna sound the same if go all Lorena Bobbit on a cheap speaker or an expensive one.
