You cant judge how well someone plays their guitar, right? If they play it how they want, then i guess they are good? Does speed make someone good? Does feeling make someone good? Knowledge of theory? Lack of theory? I have no idea, i dont see how to judge someone on their guitar playing abilities.

The ability to play what you want to play makes you good in your eyes. The ability to play what others want you to play makes you good in their eyes.

Simple, no?

hmm... i dont say music is good or bad. its just a matter of taste.

Good is subjective. Just play guitar and have a good time.

Guitar players would all be better off if they all lived on private islands without internet access.

Good at guitar means you are good at guitar. just because you play the guitar well doesn't make you a good musician though.

I think you always have one big critic and that's yourself, you'll always be trying to be better then your self. I dont think you can ever say im good enough.

well.. i pretty much admire players who can play pretty much anything the comes into their heads instantly.. that ability would come in pretty cool.. I mean.. It like when your onstage and you suddenly think of something that would sound awesome.. but you just aren't sure what to hit..

Well there is many ways one can be good.

1. Like herman. Amazing skill but in my opinion not so gerat music writing skill
2.Songwriting
3. Influencing others
4.Improvisation

And last but not least just have a blast playing with yourself (no pun) and playing with others

I find it helps to keep telling yourself your terrible, even when you know your scales off by heart and can improvise a decent solo in Metallica style speed.

'Cause if ya keep telling yourself you suck, your gonna wanna get better, and better, and better and... etc

Otherwise you could just learn a single chord with no scales and tell yourself your great. Which would be a load of crap. So put yourself down continuously and you'll force yourself to improve. That’s how my mind works anyway, seems to help me

^You must be fairly unmotivated. I find practise enjoyable.

You can be skilled in various aspects of guitar, such as certain technical points, or in theory. Being "good" at guitar is always relative though. I really just wouldn't think about it, because it can get pretty philosophical pretty quick.

I see little reason for this thread to continue on any longer, as I feel we are going to start going in circles pretty soon, so try and leave it unless you have something new to contribute. Preferably something thought out.

Sir, you are good when you keep finding those things you can't do yet, achieve them, and then find the next thing.

Mine was scaling.

if you wqant to know if your good or not, just post a video of yourself playing on here. there's jazz guitarists shredheads classical guys, if one finds you good and the other bad you know what to work on and what your strong points are. no better way to find out right?

in guitar terms i say if you can do most techniques and put them together then your at that level you want. for example u must b able to do hamer ons pullofs, slide, bends, chord changes, scales, diffrent picking styles, play a variation of songs u cant just play metal ect

I think that 'good' is really whatever satisifies you, however I think a reasonable goal is to be able to be given a chord chart, and play rhythm through it and solo over it, knowing what you're playing.

Technical proficiency.
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

"good" is relative, what some people may think is good, others may think is crap. i'm a prime example, i think i'm decent, non guitarists/musician type folks (regular 4 chord players) think i'm really good and the total shredders think i'm so-so. so it all depends on who you ask.
#29
If you can play what you want to be able to play, smoothly and easily then you're "good" because that's how you see "good". Just like others have stated - people have differant opinions on what makes a guitarist good. For example, some people wank over Herman Li due to his amazing abilities and speed, some people orgasm over Petrucci because of his unbelievable song writing/technical playing skills. Whereas some people believe Slash is god simply because they havn't seen anything beyond him.

If you can play "Come As You Are" By Nirvana smoothly all the way through then who's to say you're not good? Strangely enough, i thought i was quite good back when i was learning how to improvise over progressions using the pentatonic scale, now i'm learning modal modulation etc and i still see myself as quite good. I guess it changes as you progress.

"Good" is a subject for philosophy, not something you debate in a theory forum.
