So do you mute the A string or not pick it at all?

If you mute, how, with the freat hand or the palm of the other??

you put your index on the 3rd fret but angle your finger so that it lightly touches the string below without actually fretting it i.e. mute it. then strum the thing.

well he can do that, but he will have to learn muting sooner or later. it is a handy technique.

Why can he play that instead of muting? Does it have something to do with scales? What are scales good for any way? Why learn them and when can I use them?
