hi, i have a behringer v-amp lx210 which has bass, mid, treble, and presence settings, but i have no idea how to set them so that it sounds good. i play metal, can someone help me?

bass- 10
mids- 6-7
treb - 6 (or 7-9 for more bite)
basically..mess around with it!

how does the presence control work? the manual says it's a high-frequency filter... idk.

Yep, the manual is correct.

The presence is best used if left in the middle when trying to find a good setting with the treble/mid/bass knobs and when say you play in a different area you can adjust the presence as a treble booster or cut instead of having to adjust 3 knobs for 10 minutes straight.
