My friend and I had quite a lengthy discussion earlier about palm muting and how when used correctly it can add so much to a riff.
This led on to songs where it's used effectively and ultimately guitarists who use it well.

In the end we both agreed that James Hetfield is a master of the technique, especially on the earlier albums such as Kill ‘Em All.
Just wondering what other peoples opinions were on this.
Feel free to chip in with people not in the poll; I'm bound to miss people out.
An example of a song they use it in would be good aswell.

Of the ones in your list, either Hetfield or Dimebag. I prefer Dime, actually.

There's loads more but you can only put 10 options in a poll. And as you've probably guessed I'm a bit of a metal head

Does anyone know any (non-metal) guitarists who use it well.
I was trying to think of a few blues guitarists but no one really sprang to mind.

Rolling Stones possibly? I had some notion them palm muted for some reason.

Palm muting sounds like an act of stealthy self love.

Paul Gilbert has amazing EVERYTHING technique LOL
It's just comforting that as amazing as he is on guitar he still has crap dress sense.

Kinda stereotypical, but Hammett got some skills.

"Master of Puppets" is the perfect example. that shit's crazy.

I've got tons more faves, but too lazy think. School's drained me.

Voted for his Mustaine. His palm muting is something I'd like to steal for myself. I quite like it when its used by Adrian Smith in his solos.

I voted MegaDave

James Hetfield, even though I prefer what he does, uses palm muting always the same way, whereas on many songs Mustaine uses palm muting differently, he mutes the srings more or less depending on what he wants to do.

Looks like it's a battle between Metallica and Megadeth. It would be interesting to know how they influenced each other since Mustaine used to be in Metallica.

Who really gives a shit? Everyone and their gran's tortoise can palm mute, it's not exactly a revolutionary technique....

Dimebag, he really gives it a chunky feeling on songs like "5 Minutes alone" and the live version of "A New Level". And I'm sure it's just due to their great gear, but Slayer's pm's are flawless, it's right in between an open and dull note.

i think this is more of a player's tone than his palm mute technique. I mean palm muting is simply puting your hands on the bridge and strumming, in a sense. But the original tone is what makes the palm mute stand out from the rest. Metallica and Megadeth both have excellent thrash metal tone thats most suited for palm muting.

If you really don't give a shit then why go through the effort of reading a thread you don't care about and posting a reply?
We all know you and the younger kids you hang around with at school think you're great because you can play basket case nearly all the way through. Get over it!

When does he PM a lot?

Not saying I don't like him, he's a fantastic player, but I haven't heard much PMs by him.

I always loved Scott Ian's tech. Gilberto is a close second.

The palm muting on A.I.R. is incredible! I've always struggled to strum really fast and PM at the same time. There's obviously a certain knack to it which sadly I don't have
