I put this in the acoustic forum a few months ago and feel that I could have a larger discussion here. How do you barter in terms of buying a guitar? What is the most you have ever got off a guitar? Any tips on getting the best deal? Discuss!

I got about 50 euros off my second guitar, basically it was cos the guy knew I had bought my first ever guitar at his shop

it helps if u have a mate at a guitar shop coz my cousin saved about £150 when he bought a load of gear from allegro

i think the best way isnt to get the guitar for cheaper, but to get assecories for free, like guitar straps, cables, picks, etc

its usually pretty much useless to talk down a guitar if you dont know the person, its a small personally owned shop, or know for sure that the guitar is not nearly worth as much. otherwise, youre wasting your breath.

hmm, In Australia people seem to barter all the time, I have heard of multiple people on these boards buying acoustics (cole clark) and getting from 1400, to 1100 without knowing anyone.

I got 300 bucks (aussie) off my Yamaha APX acoustic (retail price $1000) and got them to throw in a high quality gig bag and fresh set of strings.

The RRP of the guitar I want just went up 100 dollars apparently (cole clark FL1AC) So I am going to have to do a shit load of haggling, maybe 1200 with a case (hopes)

I have always been told never pay RRP. When I was on the phone to billy Hyde (AUS guitar shop) I mentioned the price and he said they do the best prices, because their site lists it really low.

^ Usually things sell for below the RRP, if it's anything above, you can almost certainly find it cheaper.

Well I got a tenner off an effects pedal before because the case was missing :S I didn't see exactlly why the case cost £10 but I wasn't complaining.

Also My friend gets money off stuff at allegro because he did work experience there and knows the people, and they pretend the equipment is "shop soiled" so he gets money off.
