Well, basically, I need to memorize Walt Whitman's "O Captain My Captain" in one day. and I'm pretty much screwed. I have managed to pretty much get down the first verse (stanza?) but if anyone can give me some tips for remembering this, it's greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

O Captain! My Captain! (1900)

1

O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart! 5
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

2

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills; 10
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck, 15
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

3

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won; 20
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

1. Correct. They are called stanzas.

2. Write the poem out by hand as many times as it takes. Each time you write it, look less at the paper to get the words down. Essentially, you want to write it out so much that you remember it.

3. In the future, maximize the time given to you to get something like this done.

i love this poem, its a classic, but about the whole memorizing it, if you say it in a rythm or make it into more of a song, youll probably remember it better...i dunno, works for me, good luck

It really really helps if you know the proper way to say it (where the accent points are). But if not its a lot harder. Its a very simple poem, but you need to make sure you're learning it correctly.
Take note of the similarities between stanzas. 4 long lines, then 4 sort lines. The fact that each starts using the word Captain and ends with "Cold and Dead." This help you make sure you've not missed anything.
It would be good if you could find an mp3 of someone reading the poem correctly (limewire or some literature website?)

In 5th grade we had to draw pictures for that poem. Just write it down a bunch or have someone else read it to you, that's what I normally do.

Here, this will help. Pick one of the readings that sounds most simple to you. It helps to repeat it with at least a little bit of drama.

Just read it over and over, saying it to yourself. Eventually you'll find you don't need to look at the paper.

I have to do the same thing...

Mine's much easier to memorize though. I'd second the advice about writing it, that usually helps me.

just keep reading it over and over again, but thnk about the structure of each line as u say it. if u have time, start by memorizing the fisrt line, then the second line, then start over and recite everything, then do line 3, then all, then memorize line 4, then read it all, keep going on and on. record urself saying it, and listen to it on headphones while you sleep.

or write it somewhere like, on a small paper, or ur shoe, or ur friends forehead

Okay, I've pretty much got the first two stanzas down almost perfectly, although I just hope that I don't forget overnight....

Record yourself saying it and listen to it at night. It will enhance what you've already memorized, at least, it did for me for this thing in latin.

Okay, I'm on a computer in school. The poem has to be remembered by next period, and I think I've got it. I just need to work on the last stanza, but I think I'm gonna do pretty good.
