i was wondering...are there any existentialists on this site?

if you dont know...existentialism is kind of a religion...but not really...more of a philosophy..you have to be fairly intellectual...but you wonder how can there be a god as cruel as one to give us the feeling of curiosity..but never being able to figure out everything..and the whole human existance thing is unexplainable if there is no god....and everything thing we do...each little trivial thing that gets us through the day, amounts to nothing, because it solves absolutely nothing....its really depressing....but yea...just wondering

As a Catholic, I already get enough depression out of my religion.

GJ for finding something that works for you though.

Dostoevsky ftw

Seriously, his Notes From Underground is more than just the first existentialist literary work - it's also just a kickass mindfuck

Plus, hey - Nietzsche liked him =D

Fairly intellectual my ass. Stop overusing those elipses. Damn it, and stop whining. Life's there to enjoy. It doesn't matter if everything you do is pointless because some of the most pointless things in life are rather entertaining.

Isn't that Nihilism?

I thought Existentialism was the belief that you've created everything in your mind and only you exist.

I think I need to do more research

I get the feeling you're talking to the wrong crowd....is existentialism similar to transcendentalism....I've never looked into it much......nihilism is so muc easier.....but if I thought about it....I might get into it.....I like Henry David Thoreau

I am an existentialist. I suggest reading Albert Camus, Kierkegaard, or Nietzsche if you wanna get into it. It's funny how every notable existentialist thinker (like the ones aforementioned) denied the label 'existentialist'.

If you're into that kind of thing you should watch I Heart Huckabees. We watched it last year in philosophy and it wasn't all that bad.

^^Great movie, but it's not exactly a valid interpretation of the idea.

An existentialist may believe in God or not: read Kierkegaard, a Christian, and one of the most important thinkers of the movement. I encourage you to read Camus (in particular his "Myth of Sisyphus"), among others, to at least develop a basic understanding of existentialism. You need to research a little more carefully before speaking authoritatively on a topic like this.

Transcendentalism is about god existing but in everything and in nature. Existentialsim is not that, and even after reading what wiki had to say about it, I'm still not sure.

what existentialism represents is just doubt, what do you doubt about? everything: life itself your meaning, your role as a person, everything. it's not an aversion or a disbelief, just a doubt which leads you to ponder about these things. there's a fantastic novel from Hermann Hesse that shows all of this clearly, nobel prize novel and all, but I don't remember it's english name, its called "El Lobo Estepario" in spanish. but yea, you should read Kierkegaard

That's pretty stereotypical..."You have to be fairly intelligent to be an existentialist, if you're not then too bad you can't be one."

Existentialism, is black listed in my manual. Its one of the 6 sub pillars of "liberalism", therefore, my leaders have told me not to research or look into it. It would probably be best is nobody else does either.

Herman Hess novel you are talking about original title was Steppenwolf translated in french as " Le loup des steppes". Although existencialism inspired a lot of litterature, it is also a philosophy. For a good introduction to the philosphical concepts, see J.P. Sartre "L'existencialisme est un humanisme" which I would translate as "Existencialism is a humanism". A lot of J.P. Sartre's plays are refered as existentialist such as "Huis clos". Of course existentialism is often disregard by analytical philosophers. As for the reference to the 6 pillars of liberalism I would be interested to know where that came from. Not to pick on anyone, but I find that a lot of people are refering to liberalism whitout fully understanding the concept and its history. I also think that people forget that they are two main type of liberalism (political and economical).

You know...You really should, like...Learn how to write proper sentences...Because otherwise you look like...A complete fucking tool.

You aren't intellectual. This is a lame attempt at trying to look like you have half a brain. :\
I seem to go through the day easily enough without having the kind of knowledge you explained.

i used to be (kind of, i never called myself that but it fit) but i eventually started to see many of those ideas as contradictory and kind of shaped my own beliefs off of a mix between existential ideas and completely opposite ideas

What're the other five pillars?
