Technically, yeah. In reality, plugging your guitar into the amp when its on creates an annoying popping sound. Thats about the extent of the damage you can cause.

Yeah, thats what everyone has always said. Personally, I've never hurt anything and never actually met anyone who has fryed an amp this way.

Maybe its like the "leave your car on while you pump gas and it'll blow up" thing.

Yes, i've also heard plugging your guitar in and out when the amp is on is a bad idea. I've got into the habit of plugging my guitar into the amp then turning it on. And if I have to unplug my guitar I will turn the amp off first.

i always got told at shops to turn it off before switching guitars otherwise it damages the amp somehow.....is it actually true ??

It does damage it if you turn on --> plug in guitar --> play

or turn on with cord still in amp but not guitar --> plug into guitar -->
