I'm having trouble doing the 4th arp of Eugene's Trick Bag. The fretting seems really awkward. Can anyone help? It's the one that goes:

E||------------------10-13-------------||
B||---------------10-------10----------||
G||----------7-10-------------10-7-----||
D||--------7-----------------------7---||
A||----5-8-----------------------------||
E||--5---------------------------------||

I have a lot of trouble fretting these cleanly and up to speed and I have no idea when to switch positions. Any tips?

Its a hard arpeggio..... Do you play the A and G strings with hammer-ons??? That makes it alot easier i find....

I'm economy picking the whole thing. I find that if I sweep or use legato it sounds kind of mushy (btw by economy pick instead of sweep I'm picking rather hard instead of a sweeping motion instead of alt picking it like Vai, since I don't alt pick).

By the way my problem really isn't picking it, since I can do it pretty close to full speed, but rather cleanly fretting the notes. The 4th arp is what kills me since I have no idea when to change position or anything. No reference video. Maybe I'll check around youtube or something.

I woudl slide from the D on the g'string to the F. That would mean only one position change...

I substitute that arp to become this so that it'd be easier to roll my index finger around it.

B||---------------------10-----------10----------------||
G||----------------7-10---------------10-7-----------||
D||-------------7----------------------------7---------||

E||--5--10----------------------------------------10--||

I think I'll combine sheumack111 and madpickin03's advice. Seems to help if I stretch from 5 to 10 on the low E and hit the next note with my middle finger on the A string and slide up on the G.

Man, sometimes I wonder how Vai played it so cleanly, then I remember we're talking about Vai. Thanks guys.

compared to other vai's song, personally i think this is easier/st

I play it like that, since that's how it was transcribed in Guitar Techniques years ago.
Don't know whether it's correct, but I do a first finger barre for the 4th and 5th notes (the 7's on the D & G strings) and a second finger barre for the next three notes, stretch to play the 13th fret note with my little finger, then do the same in reverse.
I don't find it too difficult.

Oh, and I alternate pick, but not strictly - I play the first note with a downstroke, hammer on the second and play the third with a downstroke for example.
