I'm doing some talent show thing and basically the only talent I have is to play bass. What's a good 2-3 minute bass sol I can learn? NOTE: I tried Anesthesia, can't do it

orion is pretty good

if u have a 6 string bass find the tabs for "solar groove" and get the guitar pro version.
if u dont have guitar pro...then try and find the bass tabs for it and look it up on youtube.
search "john myung solar groove"

heres the link to the video:

That's like, a 20 second solo.

Anyways, NIB by Black Sabbath isn't very hard, I picked it up relatively easy.
Idk if you're into pop slap, but Classical Thump by Vic Wooten is IMPRESSIVE. But if you can't double thump (see: me), there's about 30 seconds of a 7 minute song you can actually play.

Another idea is you could do a medley of recognizable basslines with a drummer, or even alone.

I was looking at a used Warwick Vampyre LTD 5'er for about $200. I went home to grab my wallet and came back and some jerk with an epic beard got it already..

If you wanted to be badass you would just do a groove session with the drummer. If you search "lemon song bass" on youtube you'll get an example of what I'm talking about.

Epiphone SG Goth
Ibanez Soundgear Bass

My bad. Try the intro to Journey to the End of the East Bay by Rancid. And there's no need for sarcasm smb.

At the moment, I'd say Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) by Cliff Burton (Metallica).

Good job.

Well, if you cant play Anesthesia then Classical Thump and basically most of the ones mentioned above are going to be impossible,

How about Stu Hamms Love Thang? Thats pretty easy - you dont need to go into the Moonlight Sonata tapping bit, just the start (Love Thang) will do.

if you dont know it, here is a link.

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=1158095372160188114&q=stu+hamm%2C

and here is the tab:

P.h: Pinched Harmonic
P: Pull Off
H: Hammer-0n
/: Slide Up
\: Slide Down
~: Let note(s) Ring (listen to it to get the timing)
*: Very lightly play the note(s)

Play the riffs in the order that they are listed.

Here is the "Love Thang" Intro (Don't play the last three
notes in this riff on the third time round)

Orion is good, if you play the bit that starts right after the gong (I can't remember the timing) you can easily play that an improvise for a bit, then do the rest. Another is the solo from Cunning Stunts, let me find it...

Maybe the intro to Heart Of The Sunrise by Yes?
Its around 3 minutes, and sounds great.

And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

just out of curiosity....how people can play Jaco's Portrait of Tracy pretty well? like going through it with maybe 2 or 3 mistakes...you know, not perfect but damn close.

if you are good about sitting down and disciplining your hands to hit those harmonics consistantly, the Portrait of Tracy is perfect to perform (i plan to try it at my next show)

i dont think ive heard anathesia, but it took me like 15 min just to get the first 8 bars down perfectly (its a fast harmonic run that needs consistant timing and perfection)

Anesthesia is easy up to the drums, after that i swear Cliff takes ten prozacs, washed down with some acid.

I can play PoT pretty well, i still make two or three or four mistakes but i've got it down pretty smooth now. it took me months and months though. My main issue is changing quickly to the 2(6) stretch. i can play ti no worries, but my change to it is not as good as i'd like.

I play it at least twice a day !

i do it as a warm up too!

the parts i murk up on are the 5/4 (i think) alternating harmonics with the B/ Bb/ Ab bass notes....i used to not be able to fret and hit the harmonics at the same time without getting buzz, but i moved my hand position, so now its not all that bad, just cramps up if i do it too long.

it took me a while to find out how to consistantly hit those high harmonics on the 2nd fret near the part you were talking about.

Dude, I'm telling ya, play Amerika by Jaco! It's really simple and sounds great, especially if you use a bridge pickup!
