so I have a few questions...
1) On the sweep picking picking riff, should I use legato or picking when there is more than 1 note on the same string (ie 10 14 10 and 14 11 14)... if its picking, what D/U pattern should I use for it???

2) I heard that your alternate picking should be about twice the speed of your lowest picking speed (so if you play downstroke faster than upstroke, alternate should be twice as fast as your upstroke picking) ... but mine isn't! Is it normal? what exercices can I do to improve it??

3) Are those speeds decent for the amount of time I've been playing?? considering I'm self-taught...

Also, please post your speeds and for how long you've been playing... I'm curious!

You can sweep pick already? haha. I've been playing a year and I cant...wait... I've never tried :P.

I can answer your 2nd question...

Alternate picking CAN make your picking faster. How long have you been alt. picking? Keep practicing if you have for awhile you can only get faster and faster. Although I dont use a metronome, I myself have been self taught so I think your on teh rigth track. Kepp going.

Alternate picking does speed your playing up a fair bit. If you play metal and particularly the faster styles like power and thrash metals you're doomed without it

I've been playing for 16 years, and I just started getting into this faster picking stuff myself. I've pretty much been a pentatonic guy and while I'm pretty quick with that, I wanted something different to try.
I've been working with exercise and a metronome, and I've gotten to the point where I'm playing four note patterns at 140 bpm..that's four notes between clicks. I'm pretty happy with my progress, and each day I try and push it a little further. Soon I want to work on longer runs.

Generally legato but there's no hard and fast rule - you could hit the G# with an upstroke and then sweep the arpeggio.
