So if the amp says it has say 65w, does it really produce that much without a cab or is it less? I know this applies to bass amps but what about guitars?

If it is less then how much wattage would actually be produced through it without a cab?

EDIT: Sorry I thought this was obvious. If I have a COMBO AMP that has 65w then will I get the full 65w or less without a cab? If it less then how much less?

Also, if it was 125w then how much less would it be?

you need a cab to get sound out of the head i think ....

If you have cab without a head it has exactly the same wattage, however the power has nowhere to go so bits of it catch fire.

If you have a 65watt combo then it's 65 watts. If you plug it into an extension cab then it's still 65 watts.

yea combos are the amount of watts they say so if its 60
then it is 60 watts turned all the way up
other then that hooking it up to a cab really wouldnt do anything , it would only make it have more speakers which wouldnt do anything
if u want it louder connect it to a p.a system

for halfstacks the head has to be plugged into a cab or it will blow or fry out

There is a clear distinction between Watts (power) and loudness (decibels). Your amp will produce 65 watts no matter where you hook it up. How loud will it be is another question.

How loud an amp is, is small science in itself. There are articles about this on the net, just google it up.
