Just how low can I tune a Les Paul without running into issues like fret buzz, crappy tone or other problems? How could I get around them?

I would think it'd depend on how your guitar is set up. Ideally, if you stay in a lower tuning all of the time, your guitar should be setup for it.

well if you';re on a les paul you have a tune-o-matic bridge,
so you can loosen the strings up and then loosen the screws on it, to get more space between the strings and the fretboard. this way when ou tune lower you won't get teh buzzing and stuff,
but obviously only if you're always tuned low, if not then you could always try to find a middle ground in between

Still if his string height is lower than yours, he might have a few problems.
