Im trying to rewire my friends dean playmate bass, and i need to replace the pots, and they just wont come out. The knobs are in the way, and i cant get them off, there the chrome knobs you see on most jacksons and ibanez that should just be able to be pulled off with ease but there not budging, any suggestions. And I cant figure out if the top knob is volume and bottom is tone etc, what is it normally?

Plug it in, turn the knob, find out.

The knobs should come off with some force, unless your friend glued them on. On my Ibanez they fall off without external help. On most guitars, you need to grab them with a towel and pull hard.

Are the knobs screwed on? Check the sides. If not wrap a flathead screwdriver in a cloth and pry gently.

^ I agree with the pick idea

also, use a wiggling motion

heck, before you break out a screw driver try a pick by itself.
