So, Oscars are around the corner.

In my opinion they're fucked up this year. Actors and movies being nominated that don't deserve it, and actors being nominated for the wrong movies (Leo DiCaprio up for Blood Diamond rather than The Departed). And I liked Little Miss Sunshine, but Best Picture? No. And the little girl is up for Best Supporting Actress. And the only actor in The Departed (a movie full of amazing perfromances) nominated for anything was Mark Whalberg.

Fucked up this year.

Oh well.

Opinions? Reflections? Thoughts on what the best/worst movies of 2006 were?
Poor advice.

Agreed. He didn't even do that great of a job in Blood Diamond, unlike in the Departed.

Jack Nicholson should have been nominated, as well.

And I like Little Miss Sunshine ... so I'm fine with that.

Little Jaden Smith should have gotten a best supporting actor nomination, cos he was awesome in pursuit of happyness and some of the nominees in that category were barely average.

It's not. Eastwood's other war movie from the Japanese side is nominated (for some reason).
Poor advice.

It's becauase it has Eastwood and Spielberg's name on it. Iwo Jima was very boring.

I liked Little Miss Sunshine the best, but it won't win. The Departed is probably going to win. I really can't imagine something else, like the Queen, winning.

The Queen is getting raves for it's performances (and it deserves them).

Alot of the movies this year have performances being nominated even though the movie isn't great. Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland, Leo in Blood Diamond, etc.

It's weird how a great performance can elevate a movie to be bearable.
Poor advice.

I hope Scoresese wins an Oscar this year.

I dunno, a part of me doesn't want him to.

He's a part of this rebel, elite list of filmmakers who have never one, including Kubrick.

Ennio Morricone is up for a Lifetime Achievement Award and he's kind of pissed about it.
Poor advice.

The performances in the Queen were great. But so were the performances in the Departed. And (in my mind) The Departed was just way better than the Queen. I can't see it winning over the others because of its performances. Or maybe I'm missing something because I was 6 when Princess Diana died.

That's actually a good point. But with the directors nominated this year, he might actually win this one. As long as Martin himself is happy, I wouldn't mind, I guess.

Everyone else is outleagued compared to Marty.

Whether or not he wants it, it's his year.

I'm not too set on anything other than Male performances. I mean if Eddie Murphy ****ing wins, I will shoot somebody. There are MUCH better actors.

And I don't know if Brad Pitt is up for Supporting or Lead, but he should be in lead. I thought I heard him nominated for Supporting which is bullshit because he's really the only lead male role in Babel. Which, I might add, could beat Departed for me. I loved both, but Babel was absolutely incredible. And he ****ing deserves to win. He's not just "the pretty guy", he's a damn phenomenal actor, and it's irritating to watch him not get credit for it at every Oscar. Same with Johnny Depp.

And for the record, that asian chick from Babel, who played the deaf mute, deserves something too. That was a tough role, and she was pretty brilliant I thought.

Also, Pan's Labyrinth for Best Foreign Film. Hands down.

The Asian girl is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Pitt's not nominated, though I heard speculation that he was going to be. For a movie like Babel, there can be no dominant lead, as it's an intertwining story with many characters. It's an ensemble movie, much like Magnolia, Short Cuts, and Crash, therefore it excludes them from Best Actor/Actress awards.

Johnny Depp hasn't really done anything in awhile that could earn him a Best Actor nod. For Christ's sake, he was nominated for Best Actor for the first goddamn Pirates movie. What the hell is that?
Poor advice.

lol, that's pathetic.

He was nominated because it was a damn fine role. Isn't the point of acting to get into the role and create an original character that entices the audience, makes them excited and in love with the story/character, and leave them wanting more, etc. On that, I'd say he does that perfectly. I've never seen a character near creative and imaginative than Jack Sparrow. Johnny took the role, which could have gone very different ways, and took it to a unique level and mastered it.

I'd say that deserves something.
