this is the pit so dont bother saying "wtf? whats the point in this thread? *reported"

in bioligy today i heard something i thought was pretty hardcore...

apparantly, a certain breed of wasp pierce the skin of maggots to "inject" their eggs into them. the maggot will then go about its business until eventually the egg hatches, and the baby wasp will emerge and eat the maggot from the inside, giving it the strength and energy to fly off...

thoughts?

Why on earth would I have thoughts on how a breed of wasp reproduces? Do you want a debate on how it's unethical, or something? That we should punish the naughty wasps?

mee-OW!

personally, i do find it quite amazing the way some of the more bizarre things in nature work. this vaguely reminds me of a time my family thought it might be fun to eat mussels washed up on the south coast, and found them to be full of these weird yucky parasitic-crab-things. bleh.

Well it's kinda hard to detect sarcasm over the internet

I've seen way too many threads turn into a mindless debate on whether or not metal sucks, and there really is no point in starting another one.

They lay eggs in the nest of another species of bird, cockoo chicks hatch earlier and push the eggs of the other bird out of the nest.

Right?
Dear God, do you actually answer prayers?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.

Thats one of the most commonly used examples in the arguements for ID (Intelligent Design) along with the old 'Human Eye' one (that has been totally knocked down). but yeah, it evolved, end of..... and what doo cuckatoo's do??

Ever heard about those parasites taht infect the brains of Ants and make them climb to the top of plants and grass in the early morning so that they get eaten by birds, then the parasite can live happily in the bird with lots of food and comfort

Bloody hell, thats just weird.

And yes cookoo's do kick the other eggs out of the nest as states above.
#22
I'm fairly sure that the cookoo actualy pushes the eggs out herself, then lays her own to be reared by the other bird. Though i could be wrong. Birds aren't my strong point.

Dinky's right. The mother cuckoo raids the nest of another bird, pushes the nesting birds eggs out. Lays her own then lets the nesting bird look after them.

Pretty awesome.

It's like taking a massively messy dump in someone elses toilet and not flushing! Letting them do all the clearing up.
