anyone knows?

i was impressed by his tone...

specifically, we'll be playing comfortably numb for a debut...

Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar. If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.

he has a set of custom EMG'z for a strat that come wired into a pick guard, all you have to do is solder it to the input jack, and it sounds amazing, theres not one position that doesnt sound great. i have it on an american strat and i love it.

I heard he only uses EMGs live 'cos his signal goes through so much stuff that it needs to be active to make it out the other end. So good luck finding out all the stuff he uses. My sister could probably play through his rig and it would still sound good.

And after all that's said. David Gilmour is my favourite rock guitarist so yay. I think most of his tone is in his fingers. Good luck on your mission though.

the tone is definitely in the fingers. so long as you have a decent overdrive and delay you should concentrate on the playing.

at one point he switched back to stock pickups because the EMGs "sounded too much like humbuckers"

Even with fingers like his, it's very hard to get his sound on some songs.

I mean, if you practice until you flawlessly immitate every slide and bend it'll sound great and all but if you're trying to achieve his recording sound it's ridiculously hard. (And that has to do with a whole bunch of recording methods they use)

If you have enough pedals (EQs, reverb, different fuzzes and overdrives, delays, etc.), you can tweak them until you can get a similar sound. A bit costly and not exactly time-efficient though.

The guy that writes gilmourish.com is a pretty good guide though. I ended up buying an Electric Mistress cause of him. Although he doens't really list all of David's gear (where you can google more pages like gilmourish). Actually, I wish I could find it but I remember there was some site where it showed his entire setup from Guitar World, Guitar Player and (some other guitar magazine).. which even included how he wires his strats.

i have his sig pups and they are waaaaaaaay too modern for my liking

in his famous black strat he has had fender, DiMarzio FS-1, and the most recent seymour d's custom wound

http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=66

a good gilmour tone i find is a nice strat with maybe a fender twin, some reverb and/or delay, then some meaty od for solos

all in the fingers

www.gilmourish.com for the Gilmour *****s. Guitar World had a big thing of his history of gear and etc, it was the issue with Tom Morello on the front talking about making space/crazy sounds with your guitar.

The pickups in your guitar are the least of your worries if you want his tone.

First things first, get a Hiwatt 100 head. Good luck finding one though.

Threadstarter - Looking at your gear, the Strat copy into the Fender amp with a bit of gain should give you a good approximation of his sound, you might want a fuzz pedal for the Comfortably Numb solo - I think he used a Big Muff for it, but it might have been a Fuzz Face.

I really need to buy a Strat. You can't sound like him with my guitars.

his main over drive comes from a hiwatt 100 watt head, some delay, and a big muff for overdrive

or so he said in guitar world a few months back =\

Phasers and delays and stereo chorus, and especially the uni vibe are some great pedals he used. Maybe A fuzzface? Oh and those emg's for his strat are around 250...I saw it on emg.com

Ive got that magazine...Guitar world and it says the way he wires his strat

Settings= Fuzz Box, delay, and bright eq settings, Whammy pedal that goes up and octave when pressed, uses it on "the blue", Division bell, Songs of the humpback..

1970 strat with custom wound settings (played this on Live8) Black strat

Uses his red strat with emg's when playing for instance at earls court in england for big concerts.

Used black strat throughout making of "On and Island"

100 watt highwatt head and 4x12 cab.

Uses a fender tweed twin amp

Lap steel guitar (Dark Side of the Moon)

Acoustic martins, D-35(wish you were here) 1945 D-18. Uses cheap baby taylors.

Uses a gibson J-200 celebrity(only made 99 of these,none left) on live 8

Ok well thats all the info i got on gear in the article, if you ever see one pick it up, its a great read. Most of the gear he used back when he first started others are with On an island and live 8.
