So I was fooling around in Guitar Pro, and I was thinking of writing a funk song just for poops and giggles. I'm a bassist myself, so first of all I wrote down some funky basslines, added some drums and now plan on adding a horn selection and a guitar. Here's my question: how do you guitarists write those razor-sharp, crispy funk riffs? Is there a special formula or something?

Muted strings and wah?

No, I'm not asking about the sound itself, I'm asking abut the structure of the riff. And what exactly you mean by "they're called scales"? Just playing power chords really high?
Mix some powerchords, muted strings and notes together, in a funky pattern with a wah wah pedal.
