In my opinion, a beginner does not need pedals.
So save your money for now.
For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

What kind of effects are you looking for?
Dave Mustain has wrote some of the most amazing solos...
That he can't actually play!

Distortion is probably the most widely used effect. And behringer pedals aren't too good.

a lot of people look for a wah for their first pedal.

I would say either a Wah or a chorus. What's your price range? And avoid the Danelectro pedals, they are cheap for a reason (poor quality all around)

But anyway.
I've been playing a year and never really felt the need for any bass pedals.

Buy both pickups. Rub icyhot on both of them. Sandwich your penis between them and walk to the nearest homeless shelter with your brand new icyhot penis sandwich.

I have had a Big Muff for a while, but not used it as much as I should do. Although it is pretty cool. It all depends on why and how you play the bass. Don't get a pedal unless you really want to, and would put it to good use (a bit of hypocrisy there... )

I only use a EQ. No need for pedals, then it doesnt sound much like a bass.

That is why I tend to steer away from them when playing in a group. At home it is fun to mess around with them, but then it is hardly worth the price just for home use

Unless you specifically need one for your band, the only one you'll probably need for home use would be a wah, I think. Practicing with distortion pedal isn't a great idea because it muffles your mistakes.

depends on what kind of music you play

Java?

Anyway, distortion is a generic start. unless you REALLY need an effect, don't buy one.

1) It's spelled "pedal."
2) Don't buy one if you're just learning to slap and pop - learn to play the damn thing first before you buy toys for it.
3) Blues doesn't really require any effects pedals; an EQ pedal or compressor. Maybe a chorus, but that's pushing it really.

Couldnt agree with you more.

If you need to ask "what pedal should i buy", you dont need to buy one.
