This is a pretty basic theory question, but that's about where I am in my theory right now. Understanding that this progression (and many times thowing in a minor of the VI) is widely used has been very helpful for me in working out the chords on songs I am learning.

Are there other widely used progressions in major scales that I should understand?

Edit - In looking at the other forums, perhaps this belongs in the Musician Talk forum - mods please let me know if this should be moved there - I just pretty much hang here...
