#2

#4

The main issue is that real Les Pauls are solid mahogany (often with a maple cap).

Most people buy Epiphones to get that Les Paul tone at a cheaper price, but a mixture of alder and mahogany won't sound the same.

The Epiphone Les Paul Plain Top is solid mahogany I think.

They don't make it left handed. Standard is the only one in my price range.

Well what's your price range and what music do you play?

There's plenty of guitars out there, even for lefties .

I think it sounds good, but I really only use it as a back-up guitar now.

The alder gives it a better tone for leads/solos IMO..

Ash body is where its at.

If a les paul is what you want, check out Agile guitars.

They make solid guitars for the price (and don't jack up the price a lot for lefties ).

The Schecter Omen 6 is also a solid starter guitar.

MIM Strats are Poplar, MIA Strats are Alder.

EDIT: I'm wrong.

Nothing wrong with Alder, just a different sound than Mahogony.

And I'd advise against Epis or Gibsons. Overpriced as hell.

Agile eh? Do they make quality stuff? I've heard the name, but not too much info on em. I'll look up some reviews.

They are solid guitars for the price and surprisingly well built.

Hmmm, these Agile's are lookin to be nice. I like the fact that they offer the guitars in more then one color in L/H (I'm lookin at you epi)
#23
all strats are alder and most jacksons are alder as well its a great tone wood just like mahogany they just sound different. alder is more of a bright crisp sound, mahogany is more of a warm bassier sound but after all the effects and EQ its not too hard to make an alder guitar sound more like a mahogany one and vice versa
#24
algee would kill you for even considering agiles.

and yes, alder is a good tonewood, but i'm guessing the stuff in the LP special isn't super-high quality. can you say 11 piece body?

Cheap amps are "that bad". They suck up your tone like cocaine at Kate Moss' party.

You just have to get at least a AL-3000, if you're getting an LP style, I believe is the general consensus, to get a quality guitar.

Is the 3100 better cause that's what I was gonna go for.

I think that MOP version has Mother of Pearl inlays (aka it looks prettier than normal inlays).

It's mostly personal perference, but I think a wider neck can be more comfortable and easier to play on.
