Punk isn't the first genre you think of when you think of really great lyrics, cause it's really not the point I think. But that doesn't mean there aren't talented lyricists in punk. I'd say the Germs had the best lyrics, Darby Crash wrote surprisingly poignant lyrics, some of which made a statement that was definitley in keeping with the Germ's attitude. So what do you say is the band or writer with the best lyrics?

"Richie Dagger's Crime"

[Chorus:]
I'm Richie Dagger
I can stomp and swagger
I can take on all your heroes
I'm Richie Dagger
I'm young and I'm haggard
The boy that nobody owns
He sits in his corner like a child despised
A crazy sort of cast comes over his eyes--
That's Richie Dagger's crime

He's the sort of boy who was never much loved
His idea of fun was society's grudge--
That's Richie Dagger's crime

His life was a mess
And his friends weren't quite the best
But he was satisfied--
That's Richie Dagger's crime
Suck me in and spit me out
Devour me in haste

[Chorus]

He could set your mind ablaze
With sparkling eyes and visionary case
He stood like the remnant of an outbreak past
Wore something in his ear and
Boy was he sass--

[Chorus]

I don't think this is his best song, but it's my favorite

Final Transmission - Street Dogs
He had just turned nineteen yesterday
Wanted to be a school teacher someday
Came from a small and modest town
Had never before traveled abroad
He signed on the promise of a college fund
Pop and Mom begged him to stay at home
The last time they saw him was at an airport
He hugged his distraught mother a final time
He went abroad to serve when he was only nineteen
Reality caught up with him, stole a heart full of dreams
He's never gonna get a chance to chase all those hopes
Lost them all amidst this war and smoke
Can you hear the sound of youth negated?
Watch on TV names are taken
Mother, Mother
My final transmission
Paris Island was plain hell on earth
Got gunny yelling at him, "better prove your worth"
Moved on to Baghdad about six months on
Caught an IED today, now he is gone
He went abroad to serve when he was only nineteen
Reality caught up with him, stole a heart full of dreams
He's never gonna get a chance to chase all those hopes
Lost them all amidst this war and smoke
Can you hear the sound of youth negated?
Watch on TV names are taken
Mother, Mother
My final transmission
Dad and Mom I am your only loving sing
Hid a written final transmission under my helmet
Love you both in heart and mind
A better set of parents no boy could ever find
Weep for me and say thy prayers
Remember me through all your years
Only got to serve for six months on and
If you're reading this I have passed and gone
So I harbor my final request
A letter in my memory please send
Off to the President and all his men
Begging him with others to bring the troops back home
He's never gonna get a chance to chase all those hopes
Lost them all amidst the war and smoke
Can you hear the sound of youth negated?
Watch on TV names are taken
He's never gonna get a chance to chase all those hopes
Lost them all amidst this war and smoke
Can you hear the sound of youth negated?
Watch on TV names are taken
Mother, Mother
My final transmission

Other songs I think have great lyrics are:
Story of My Life - Social Distortion
Every Night - Screeching Weasel
Road Signs Always Look Better Looking Over Your Shoulder - Defiance, Ohio
And so many more that I'm too tired to think of right now.

Edit: Whoops, you asked artist... I'm gonna have to go with either Street Dogs, Social D, or Defiance, Ohio, but there's too many to pick just one.

SUCK ME IN AND SPIT ME OUT, DEVOUR ME IN HASTE!!!!! god i love that line every time i hear it. but yeah heres a REAL good one lyrically, and perhaps the ONLY song that made me think about ol jesus, cuz most punk songs lyrics just don't hit the nail hard enough but this one certainlly did........ here it is CRASS "So What"

They ask me why I'm hateful, why I'm bad.
They tell me I got things they never had.
They tell me go to church and see the light.
Cos the good lord's always right.

So what, so what.
So what if Jesus died on the cross.
So what about the ****er, I don't give a toss.
So what if the master walked on the water.
I don't see him trying to stop the slaughter.
They say I wouldn't have to live from bins.
If I would go along, confess my sins.
They say I shouldn't commit no crime.
Cos Jesus Christ is watching all the time.

So what, so what.
So what if he's always over my shoulder.
I realise the truth as I get older.
I get to see what a con it is.
Because it's my life, mine not his.
Well, they say they're going to send me away.
Said they're going to make me pay.
We're sorry but you got to go.
But you were naughty, you said "No".

So what, so what.
So what if I see through the lies.
So what if the people I despise
Twist my arm and make me work,
I'm no deaf, no ****ing jerk.
I'm no spastic lying in the street.
I'm no superstar elite.
I'm just a person, a human being.
NO YOU'RE NOT, YOU'RE A PART OF THE MACHINE.
You're a part our machine because we want you to be.
We've got you now and you'll never be free.
We can even have your body after you're dead.
We can take the eyes out of your ****ing head.
Yes we'll take them out, use them again.
We can do it you know cos we've got your brain.
We'll crucify you like we crucified him.
We'll make you obey our every whim.
We got the power, the power and the glory.
I've heard that before in a different story.
But the story I heard covered up the truth,
Didn't touch on the actual factual proof.
Didn't say about the bodies in the concentration camps,
Didn't say about the (surgeons) knives underneath the lamps,
Doesn't say that the ovens are still warm,
Doesn't say that this wretched little form
Is a human being who wants to live
But not in the snot and shit they give.

They say that I had better keep quiet
Or they're gonna douse my light.
Jesus Christ can save my life,
But I can always use my knife.
So what, so what, so what, so what, so what, so what, so what, SO WHAT.
I love all forms of Rock 'n' Roll, past and NOT present

Punks With Clean Kitchens by Evan Greer- He's a great songwriter, another one of my favorites of his is "Love Me, I'm a Liberal" which he updated with modern lyrics

with held hands and spray cans
flashlights held in our teeth
we built tunnels under their concrete
and we once stole the floor right from under their feet
they never saw it coming
but after our laughter had given us away
remember how we ran all through the day?
and their shouts and batons were no match for our songs
i bet the chief of police drank a stiff one that night

and someday we should give back all the traffic cones that we stole
and all the wrenches that we borrowed from your school
but tonight we're both alone, so i'll call you on the phone
and we'll drink together from 300 miles away
don't forget to remind me of things that i just shouldn't say...

(chorus)
give us a toast! give us a light!
for every ghost and bump in the night
for every story we should never tell
give us a toast to the nights we gave em hell!

the helicopter lights held us in their sights
and the megaphone drone echoed in the night
they lowered their guns we sat down and linked arms
they told us not to move, two hearts beat "**** you!"
they said you can be killed if you won't be bought
and with one hand in your's and one eye on the door
i said, "captain, take yer best shot!"

well in retrospect that was not the best thing that could have said
but i've never claimed to be diplomatic
but it was our lucky day, and in the end we got away
and we passed out that night curled up on the floor of your attic

(chorus)

oh my friend things have been hard
and our old weaknesses are tearing us apart
something's been growing between me and you
it's the difference between the things that we say and the ones that we do
so here's to the days when that wasn't true
and here's to the promise those days will come back soon...

here's one for the wobblies and one for the elves
one for our comrades locked up in their cells
one for the kids out there hoppin' and hitchin'
the raider's of dumpsters, the punks with clean kitchens
to the mexican mother with a plan of attack
a baby at her breast and a gun on her back
here's to the day all the flags will be black
and each one comes packaged with it's own match!
here's to the nights when no one sleeps alone
and you can't tell the difference between fire and stone
for each little girl who just won't behave
if you wanna be free then you gotta be brave
if you ain't got no masters you can't be a slave!
we're going somewhere at the edges of love
we're through with the old world, we've had quite enough
you best not be silent if you wanna come
get yer fist in the air and start singing along...
now pour me another, let's write the next song!

when we're done think of all the empty bottles that we'll have
i'm sure we'll put them to good use
cuz i hear sirens outside, so let's sing the chorus one last time
and then my friends let's do what we've gotta do
i think that we might have a date with the boys in blue...

(chorus)

Rancid are the best punk band ever.

Tim Armstrong is a songwriting genius, is a complete fashion diva and has an incredible singing voice.

He doesn't sound like Opie from family guy at all.

Being honest is no means of survival, avoid your inner-feelings like the plague,
This is what it takes to comply with the images this structure will accomodate,
But things aren't what they seem when they're partially hidden behind walls of pretence built for peace of mind.
The barriers between us are forever maintained by our acceptance of the roles others choose to define.

In a world of competition life's portrayed as a contest where we're forced to live by making gains at others expense,
But no-one's really gaining when perpetual conflict's the result of our relationships based on pretence,
We don't need this cultural cosmetic division it upholds the self-interest on which the system feeds,
A deconditioned consciousness of mutual respect is the only way to cure this cosmetic disease.
What's up?

We Must Bleed-The Germs

It's Sunday and the streets aren't clear
The traffic's screaming
but we can't hear
The sounds...the metals...
driving us mad...
The sounds...the metals...
driving us mad...
We must bleed, we must bleed,
we must bleed

The crash as the bottle breaks
Flashes it will through my veins
The pain...the colors...
making me sane...
The pain...the colors...
making me sane...
the pain...the colors...
making me sane...
We must bleed, we must bleed,
we must bleed

I'm not one I'm two, I'm not one
I'm two, I'm not one I'm two
I want out now, I want out now
I want out now now now now now
now now now...

Dead Kennedys - I Kill Children

I kill children
I love to see them die
I kill children
And make their mamas cry
Crush 'em under my car
I wanna hear them scream
Feed 'em poison candy
To spoil their Halloween

So your're in the kids' ward
You're in there cos you're ill
How about some Pavulon
So I can see you chill

Time to hit the scool bus
I think I'll shoot the tires
Offer them a helping hand
Of open telephone wires

Ever wanted to die?
Of course you have
But I won't till I get my revenge
I don't wanna see people any more

Things I never ever saw before
Make me see them for the shit they are
Take as many as I can away with me
Anyone can be king for a day

So I kill children
I love to see them die
I kill children
And make their mamas cry
I bang their heads in doors
I kill children
Can hardly wait for yours

Rumors Of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated - Rise Against

Please don't ask me how
I ended up at my wits end and breaking down
pages torn from books we never read
because we're plugged into this grid
don't pull this plug right now or then we'd really have to live

when i die will they remember not what i've done but what i haven't done?
it's not the end that i fear with each breath, it's life that scares me to death

when we built these dreams on sand
how they all slipped through our hands
this might be our only chance

let's take this one day at a time
i'll hold your hand if you hold mine
the time that we kill keeps us alive

your words won't save me now
i'm at the edge feeling the sweat drip from my brow
get a grip on yourself is what they say
every hour every day
hands over my ears, i've been screaming all these years

when i die will they remember not what i've done but what i haven't done?
it's not the end that i fear with each breath, it's life that scares me to death

when we built these dreams on sand
how they all slipped through our hands
this might be our only chance

let's take this one day at a time
i'll hold your hand if you hold mine
the time that we kill keeps us alive

we came in search of answers
we left empty handed again
shots fired into the sky are now returning
where the **** will you hide?

hiding from the laughter in the closet of our lives
but the door hinges are squeaking letting in thin shards of light
and now a hand's extending outward, quiet comfort they invite
do we dare take what they offer, do we step into the light?

when i die will they remember not what i've done but what i haven't done?
it's not the end i fear with each breath, it's life that scares me to death

when we built these dreams on sand
how they all slipped through our hands
this might be our only chance

let's take this one day at a time
i'll hold your hand if you hold mine
the time that we kill keeps us alive

Pull My Strings - Dead Kennedys

I'm tired of self respect
I can't afford a car
I wanna be a prefab superstar

I wanna be a tool
Don't need no soul
Wanna make big money
Playing rock and roll

I'll make my music boring
I'll play my music slow
I ain't no artist, I'm a business man
No ideas of my own

I won't offend
Or rock the boat
Just sex and drugs
And rock and roll

Drool, drool, drool, drool, drool, drool
My Payola!
Drool, drool, drool, drool, drool, drool
My Payola!

You'll pay ten bucks to see me
On a fifteen foot high stage
Fatass bouncers kick the shit
Out of kids who try to dance

If my friends say
I've lost my guts
I'll laugh and say
That's rock and roll

But there's just one problem

[Chorus]
Is my **** big enough
Is my brain small enough
For you to make me a star
Give me a toot, I'll sell you my soul
Pull my strings and I'll go far

And when I'm rich
And meet Bob Hope
We'll shoot some golf
And shoot some dope

Is my **** big enough?
Is my brain small enough?
[Repeat chorus, etc. etc.]

Chaos UK - All the versions of 'Ronnie'

Swallow the energy pill
Just to have a good time
Harmony in the head
Feeling so fine
Nothing really matters
Got nothing to create
When this peace and love drugs
Have killed the ****ing hate
As far as I can see
Ecstasy killed the anarchy
Dancing around
Like a happy spastic
You got no morals
Or are they just plastic?
Are you using drugs?
Or are they using you?
You don't really know
Cos you ain't got a clue
Take a look at the filth and the
Starving families stuck in a recession
Talk about your summer of love
I don't need it, no way, go away
**** off
Right now
Rave on
Explode:
Now you're all quiet
Run away from riot
Lost all your fight
A zombie in the night
By the day dehydrated
Feeling sad, so frustrated
Your body's a walking chemistry
Got no chemical energy

You can't believe how you make me feel
Hypocrite's fingers runnin on the till
Once upon a time you had something to say
Well, go ahead punk, come make my day
Now your suck in limbo
Like a music press bimbo
With your gold stretch limo
Hold reporters back at bay
So this is anarchy in the UK
This is it, the end of your career
Made enough money, got nothing to fear
Back in '77, you started something new
Well, the system won't get me like it's got you
So the rock'n'roll swindle goes on and on
Another punk outfit going for a song
A dead popstar's what the country needs
Another ****ing job while the moneyman feeds
So, the shining lights have led the way
Another big concert for five years pay
I used to think you meant something new
But you don't me like I see you

So, you're out on a limb but you're feeling so grand
As the rulers of this country take you by the hand
Cause you're safe in the knowledge you got somewhere to go
But you're nerves gonna crack and it's starting to show
Now the wife's gone and left you and the kids have left home
Your job's in the balance and the mortgage has grown
The car's repossessed so you're back on the bus
Is it all happening, is it worth all the fuss?
It's all as plain as could be
If only you could see
Take your face from the pillow and breathe
Is this the life that you've weaved?

Ronnie was a rebel, he also was a thief
He'd take your granny's pension and kick her false teeth
Stole his uncle's motor, drove it into town
Ronnie was a hard man, they'd never put him down
Ronnie didn't care, didn't give a ****
Take your ****ing trousers when he was down on his luck
Prison was the place Ronnie wanted to be
In with all the bad guys just like me
Ronnie was a hero, he watched it on TV
Semi-naked women and a corporate ID
Planned the biggest job the country's ever seen
A **** off great big shotgun
Ronnie's really mean

Ronnie seemed a nice boy who lived with his mother
He had a good job and he earned a few bob
Nobody suspected that he was bad
Until he drank some beer and went ****ing mad
Ronnie had a drink or two and thought he was fine
Pressure built up with some larger and lime
Took a Stanly knife out of his pocket
Slashed some ****er up, put the eyes outta the socket
Cause he's outta his mind
Real ****ed up!
Out on the town
Gonna slash you up!
Pick's on anyone who's on their own
And then he's home to his mother on the last bus home
It's not unusual to have one in your town
People like Ronnie roaming around
Lurking at the bus stop late at night
All beered up and he wants to fight
Horseness is the whatness of allhorse.

Street Dogs.

Common People
I'm tired of American socialite culture
God it makes me sick
I've got so much fire burning down inside
The time has come to face the truth and bring about a change

I don't care about all your books and magazines
All these new evolving scenes or plastic teenage dreams
Want to sing for all the angry kids up on the block
The kids are fighting dope, the people time forgot
These things are the things that stir my soul, impassion me to sing
Got so much frustration, really starting to sing
See so many faults, got things to vent and lose
All fed up with everything so this is what I choose

We have had, had enough
The time has come to call their bluff

This is a battle cry for the common people
The forgotten nowhere kids stuck
We're singing this song for all of the common people
Who've given up so much and gotten back so little

And another thing that bothers me is the black gold gang and how they use the poor
With arrogance and lies, all those fake smiles
The time has come to call them out so let the gloves come off

Us lower class kids get stuck inside a rich man's war
Seems like less about the freedom and more like mining with the world
And we're not born of entitlement, we hump down in the dirt
Sometimes it makes us wonder what we're really fighting for
These are things that light my fuse and make me wonder why

Losing my grip on the handle, off it I might fly
See so many faults, got things to vent and lose
All fed up with everything, so this is what I choose

We have had, had enough
The time has come to call their bluff

This is a battle cry for the common people
The forgotten nowhere kids stuck
We're singing this song for all of the common people
Who've given up so much and got back so little

Got a lot on my mind, too much something I think
Pretty damn opinionated, make me swim or sink
Should I give it up? Close my mouth for good?
Go back to work, I should... hell no!

This is a battle cry for the common people
The forgotten nowhere kids stuck
We're singing this song for all of the common people
Who've given up so much and got back so little
[x2]

Got no more to talk about, this is where we are
Not a damn expert only sing what's in my heart
This is what we have today and this is what we do
And if you don't like it...
