So we've come to yet another "popular scene" in music and culture: that of the emo. What do you guys think about this phenomenon that has gripped the world for the past decade-ish or so?

I personally think it started off as an original branch, but then quickly became way too big and annoying.

Third Eye Blind was the first "emo" band. They played some good music for a while. The they came out with some singles that were different, and that's what others labelled as "emo," and thus this style of music is what was built on.

I'm not a fan of it at all, but I won't trash someone because they're emo. I just hate the whole negativity, the whole "oh my God I'm the most misunderstood, most melodramatic, most self pitying, most mistreated sonofabitch ever." The cutting and shit is just unhealthy. I have no problem with individuality, but overt thrift shopping, the *TIGHT* pants, and that dark, unhappy look bugs the hell out of me.

That said, maybe emo is a lot more than just people overreacting. Feel free to share your thoughts, and/or prove me otherwise.

NOTE: I'm sure this has been done before, but I'm looking for a current, concentrated disucssion and don't feel like browsing through a year's worth of old, dead threads.

"Emo" is a phase, like Goth or Metalhead. The difference is that Goths can start wearing colours, Metalheads can cut their hair, Emo's can't uncut their arms.

That said, I think people should be able to do what they want. I believe in tolerance, not necessarily acceptance.

As an afterthought.... what forum rule did I break, or someone else break to warrant the reporting?

Not that I'm concerned, it's just morbid curiosity.

This is lame. I don't hate/love entire groups, I hate/love specific people. You can't just the whole by one ****up.

I agree, but think of it as applying to a group such as Nazis. You hate individuals, but believe what Nazis think is acceptable?

I know it's not as extreme or black-and-white as that, I'm just giving and analogy.

I've never had a firm stance on National Socialism actually. I don't agree with the mass killing of someone based on race/religion/life style/etc. but I do prefer the preservation of cultures. And no I think it's very different from scene kids and this shouldn't even be mentioned. Scene kids haven't harmed anyone, have they? As long as they respect others they're fine with me.

I'm aware, I was just showing you my ideas on the Emo scene as a group in a much larger, more everyday kind of situation. i know the two in ideals are nothing alike.

I was thinking the same goddamn thing.

It started in the DC Hardcore scene. What's wrong with people?
Poor advice.

Just so you know, the Gothic subculture arose in the '70s. The people who are, as you call it,"going through a phase," are posers.

As for the thread, "emo" music has been around for as long as music has been around. All music is meant to be emotional; instrumentally, lyrically, or both. The new wave of teens trying to create a subculuture of their own are the ones who are indeed merely going through a phase. As for the whole emo kids being depressed and suicidal thing, how often do you hear about these emo kids successfully committing suicide? Now, compare that to how often you hear about other teens actually committing suicide.

I hate bands like AFI but I love Dashboard Confessional. Does that clarify?

Basically I think there is a difference between whining and crying and long black bangs covering your eyes and being a pussy goth and then being someone who sings emotionally. DC has some great guitar parts as well, and the songs easy somewhat easy to learn and sing for the babes.

Just goes to show how much i appreciate the history of emo =P.

I'd edit my post, but we all deserve a good laugh. Besides, that Wikipedia article seems to patch things up nicely.

yeah well originally, emo kids looked like preppy surfer boys and stuff like that. Somewhere along the line emo turned into dark and depressing and cutting.....i dont see how it evolved into that

for the record, I don't think THird eye Blind was the first true emo band, I think people usually accuse Sunny Day Real Estate of that. They were pretty good though.

Nobody's demanding you to voice your opinion on something you don't want to talk about. I had an interest in this subject, no other threads were opened, and I'm not a fan of thread necromancy. So I started this one.

Sorry?

Why can't we just let emo die in pieces and blame all our social and musical problems on some other genre?
Seriously, Emo is old. I'm tired of people bashing it and all the stupid debates.
