are the different size knobs or are they universal? i got some gibson knobs for my custom guitar and when i tried to put them on they would not go on i had to force them on because i was in a hurry at the time, i was trying to put them on EMG 81/85 volume and tone controls but it just did not sseem like they were meant to go on them. there was also about 1/4 of an inch clearance between the knob and the body of the guitar. is there ne that will fit on the volume controls comfortably, because i dont want to damage the controls if these arnt the right ones.

Knobs aren't made for specific lengths. They're made for different widths of shafts.

If the shafts are too long there is no reason you can't just cut the shaft shorter. You won't break anything.
