In the solo for Alive and Amplified by the Mooney Suzuki, how does one go about achieving that crackley, raw distortion? I'm reasonably sure he uses a talk box on it (correct me if I'm mistaken), but is that what makes it "shatter" so much?

I have a Jekyll and Hyde Ultimate Overdrive and Crybaby Wah, and I'm running a Fender Strat through a practice amp...

Any suggestions on how to achieve this?
I'm saying at 1:36 in the song, when he starts the solo, he just repeatedly plays the same riff for a few bars (12 on high E, and 15b17 on B string) and the distortion just starts to crackle, so at some parts he isn't even getting any sound out of it.
