I saw them live at a zappa festival last year. They were boring to say the least.

I suppose it is weird, but they're pretty good. I have Volume 1 and 2 and a solo album by Kevin Ayers. And i've heard some good things about Robert Wyatt's solo stuff but i haven't heard that yet.

I like em, and I thought they were prog...

Nah, I dont go in the prog forum cause it deals with that shameful name called "the 80s"
I discovered this band not so long ago. Volume 1 and 2 sounded pretty cool and would be amazing if Floyd's "Piper At the Gates of Dawn" didn't exist.

Then 3 blew my mind. Its godly.

This could fit in the Jazz forum too, its rooted in Jazz/Fusion the way other psychedelic music has its roots in different styles (Sly and the Family stone - Funk, Jefferson Airplane/Byrds,etc - Folk, Cream - Blues)

I havent been able to get a hold of any album after 3.

Excellent Album, so good I dare say... excellent group.

EDIT: wtf, gimme a link to the myspace, I tried SoftMachine and TheSoftMachine and they both lead to 2 different emo kids.

Id definitely recommend 3.

And I agree, Robert Wyatt is pretty outstanding.

It wouldve been so sweet to see these guys live, especially with the classic line up (the one they had during 3 and 4).

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZrcOEoFttWU I really like this video, its short unfortunately.
For someone who hasnt heard them before, id check it out. It is what their 3rd album sounds like.

That myspace link doesnt work.

By the way, did these guys not play with Syd Barret after he "left" Floyd?

I heard that in the late 60's they played with Floyd. Not barret, the experimental years of floyd.
