I was going to right a long post, but then I decided not to, so heres what I was going to right in a shorter format.

A friend brought guitar hero over last weekend for me to borrow. After playing it non-stop for a week, I realized just how much it can help with playing.

I can sight-read sheet music/tabs faster.
The coordination between my hands has greatly improved!
My picking hand is faster and has more endurance!
My fretting hand is faster!
And I can finally play standing up!

I would seriously recommend to anyone who hasn't played the game and needs to work on anything above to rent it/borrow it and see if it helps. I was truly amazed that it helped me this much (and at all). I'm going to buy a copy this weekend and work it into my practice schedule!

Be that as it may, I was starting to get discouraged with my actual guitar playing. After taking that quick little break from guitar that actually made me better has gotten me pumped up about playing.

you know if you played actual guitar nonstop for a week, you would have gotten twice as much better.

Most "hobby" guitarists have very poor rhythm, so I wouldn't be surprised if it helped.

You mean youdidn't get any better at guitar, because our probably still holding your guitar hero controller.

To CurtisJay: I've been playing for 3 years, some I'm not a newbie who doesn't want to commit. I just hit a player's block (I guess you could call it that) and doing something fun like this got me excited about playing again.

i dont see how a guitar hero toy guitar with 4 buttons can help someone play a real guitar which has the equivalent of 132 buttons... oh yeah, its also got 6 strings instead of just pushing down on one lever.

haha, I can see where you are coming from. I have and love Guitar Hero, and I think it has probably helped me with my timing and endurance (Freebird is a bitch!). And to the people that bitch about it, grow up. It not meant to replace the guitar, its just a game. If anything, its getting more people into playing real guitar. If somebody says you're worse than them at guitar because they can play it on GH, just shove a guitar into their hands, and tell them to play it, they'll shut up (this is from experience).

Trust me, I hate the people who think that guitar hero skill = real guitar skill. I would say most of the people here dissing guitar hero haven't played it. I hated it with a passion until last week when i played it.

Guitar Hero is a fun game, but it doesnt equal guitar skill. If you play guitar, not guitar hero, you get better, end of story.

I went to my buds house today and we were playing Guitar Hero II... and then I discovered he had 'Jordan' by Buckethead, so I put it on Expert and tried as damn hard as I could to beat it, hard as hell. But my wrist was hurting and that hasn't happened for ages. I'm gonna go pick up Guitar Hero I tomorrow at some store, and play around with it... It's a fun game and does help with guitar. If you use a pick instead of your thumb it can help with your picking, and the fretting and stuff... Just play everything on Expert and it's fun.
When I played some hard riff my buds were like OAWHW OMG U R SO GOOD and theyre like 'I guess playing guitar does help with guitar hero"

The replies to this thread really demonstrate a lot of the idiotic elitism on this board..

It's a game, it benefitted the OP-- who are you to give him shit for his learning methods?

hey, guitar hero IS a very fun game, but i would never say it actually helped me play the real thing better. guitar hero is very unrealistic... there are part u gotta use the whammy bar for extra points on the game in songs that one isnt used. like i said, its a fun game, but it in no way helps playing the real guitar.

It's a fun game, and it is as close as you can get to a real guitar with 5 buttons and one string I guess. My room mate is asian and he kicks ass at the game... he can obliterate me even though I'm much, much better at real guitar than him. It's kind of humiliating.
