all right i made a thread probly about a week ago relating to whether i should get a nissan xterra, or a ford mustang GT. well i drove some guys 2002 xterra and it sucked balls. the engine was tiny and i just overall hated it. the other car im considering besides the mustang GT is the dodge durango. does anyone have one or have any of you driven one? how was it? or is there anyone that knows anything about their quality? thanks

Why on earth would you even consider a Durango over a Mustang GT?

because it has a lot more room and i like driving suv's better.

Really? Well whatever floats your boat. My parents had one of the older body style Durangos and I drove it a few times. I didn't really like it. Then again I hate big vehicles all together. New ones got the Hemi though...

my mum has a durango

around 2001 model i think

very nice

if youre gettin a new one make sure its got a hemi, my mums doesnt but its still really nice
roomy, good mileage, powerful

While I'm not a fan of mustangs. And I still don't consider them muscle cars (especially ones from 1980 up... except the 500's).
I'd still go poser muscle car over an SUV any day.
Get the Mustang GT (And I do applaud you for wanting a GT at least instead of a pansy v6 'stang)

In my humble opinion the early 2000 Mustangs just turned into chick cars. The redesigned ones are getting their bite back, with the Shelby GT-H, Shelby GT-500, and Bullitt.

Pretty much nothing after the early 70's is a muscle car...

exactly my point. im getting the car w/ the most balls that i can with the money i have...btw this will be my first car since ill be 16 in 2 months, so i say a mustang GT is a pretty damn good first car haha

While I agree, my most stereotypical example would be a Hemi Cuda, or 69/70 Charger/Challenger, a 68 Firebird, or a 69 Camaro.
But for newer muscle, I would seriously tell you an LS1 Trans Am or Camaro Z28/SS, which you CAN find for under 10k with no rust/damage and decent mileage.
But you're not a chevy fan (why? I dunno).
It's like having a corvette, but manly. Trans Ams and Camaros are also classics in every era, they've been known for their balls, mustangs were released as budget muscle cars, focusing more on 'style' than preformance.
Mustangs are for women, literally, in my area, at least 85% of mustang owners are women.

Wait, you're almost 16 and you're gonna get a V8 Mustang? You'll either total it, kill yourself, or both within 6 months. Excuse my lack of confidence in young drivers but there's a reason why insurance is so high for us guys...

I have no reason to not believe you, but try telling that to the insurance company. With any sports car your payments will be through the roof. Just for that reason alone a Mustang is not a good choice for a first car. I'm 18 and my payments for a Mustang would have been well over $200. Some places wouldn't have even covered me and I have never been in a wreck of any kind. Hell, my payments on my Grand Prix are $170/mo and it's a sedan.

yeah, and that was one of the cheapest. The fact that it's a 2000 (still considered a newish car) and it's supercharged doesn't exactly drive down the price on an 18 year old male with one speeding ticket. I know girls who've had 4 times as many tickets as I've gotten and even totaled a car yet they still don't pay as much. Fuck the system...

My advice to the threadstarter, get a small 4 cylinder that runs well and will get you around until you can really afford to buy a more powerful car. Stop worrying about how much "balls" your car has in high school...

I'm thinking about a Toyota Celica, an older Neon(plymouth or expresso or whatever), a ford escort xz2 or zx2 which ever it is, or a honda civic

out of those which ones would be better?
and moderately cheap, since I'm still unemployed and I'll have to pay for this.. I'll probably end up waiting til about 6 or 7 months after my birthday to get a car, so I'll have more money.

sorry about stealing the thread

oh and dodge durangos are okay, my parents had one, but something happened with the transmission or some ****ed up shit, and we ended up trading it in for a malibu

First off, I'm not your "buddy". Secondly now I know you aren't mature enough to handle anything more than a 4 cyl. Damn when will kids realize that how a fucking car looks just isn't that important if you're going to be flat broke because of it. Unless, of course, you are getting your parents to pay for insurance. If that's true then hey, it's their debt...

Getting everything paid for makes your first car less special I think.
If you worked hard for it yourself, and paid for all of it, no one can tell you it's not yours. Your parents can yank "your" car whenever they choose if you piss them off.

Let me interject one thing.

YOU'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL. It's pathetic to me that kids now are being picky about what kind of car they get that their mommies and daddies pay for. Be happy as long as it runs.

I'd probably go with a Civic. They're pretty reliable and you can find em for dirt cheap in considerably good condition.

Cheapest I would say Civic. They're reliable, not half-bad lookin', and the one in my family (94 Civic DX) has over 200,000 miles and still kickin' strong, I don't remember the last time we had to fix it up or send it to a shop.

for the record, i have about $1200 to my name, so basically im paying all the money i have and my parents are helping me out. its not like its my fault, this summer will be the first time i can get a job and let me tell you i'll be working literally everyday, so dont give me any of that spoiled crap. half of the kids in my school get a brand new car handed to them. ya of course my parents are going to help me out if they have the money too, and im appreciative.

edit: and to whoever told me i should get a honda civic or accord or whatever, i dont have a problem with them. my mom doesnt like them because my cousin was killed by a drunk driver when he was 17 in one because the drunk was in an suv, it was going so fast it came up over the hood and killed him.

nah, they were referring the car to me, i asked.

hmm, how rare is it to find a 2 door civic, for a decent price, preferably from $1000-6000 tops

haha, hopefully I won't have to go past 2000 or 3000

I'm trying to get a job this year, I'll have to pay for the car myself, but my parents said they'd pay insurance.

Do NOT get a Dodge vehicle of any kind cause they are known to break down all the time. Not to mention they have some of the worst transmissions of all time. As for the Mustang, I wouldn't get it if I were you, mainly because Ford's standards aren't what they used to be. Not to mention, if you're paying all the money you make on this car and something happens, then you are fucked.

For a first vehicle I would recommend a small truck (like a Ranger or a S-10) or an older model car. Cause they are relatively inexpensive, insurance won't be that much, and they are easy to work on (which is good cause I believe you should know how to fix a car before getting something like a Mustang).

It shouldn't be too hard to find a 2-door. Just search around the net on cars.com and such. eBaymotors also has some hidden gems. Just don't be discouraged to look outside of your local area.

Hold on.

Your parents are "helping you out"?

$10,000 is helping you out?

Insurance every month is helping you out?

Do they pay for your gas too?

You can die in any vehicle, if the drunk guy (or drunk chick) was driving a mustang GT at high speeds anyone could die just as easily. $1200 is not that much to your name, you can wait. You won't be paying for the insurance for a 'muscle car', you're spoiled, simple.
