Mastadon: the best metal band out there right now period (with the exception of maybe Motorhead but they're British anyway).

As for american metal bands... There's alot..

But to start with..

Early Metallica, Testament, Slayer, Dark Angel, Death, Dream Theater, Exodus, Annihilator, Cannibal Corpse, Death Angel, Flotsam And Jetsam, Megadeth, Obituary, Rush (not so metal, but the pwn anyways), Venom, Vio-Lence...

Those are just off of my head. I think they're all American, but they're widespread genre-wise. As Cannibal Corpse, Death and Obituary are death metal and
Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Slayer, Death Angel, Dark Angel, Exodus and Vio-Lence are more thrashy.
Just for reference, so you know what kind of music you're getting into.
Should be quite obvious when listening though.

Enjoy!

There's Helmet too,

I consider helmet and megadeth to be more on the grungy thrash side.

No, they don't, but they're usually generally put into that specific sub-genre.

^ They're metalcore, just like Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, and Killswitch Engage.

To the threadstarter, Relient K is a kickass metal band.

Megadeth on the grungy side of thrash? What'chu talking about? Megadeth are just about the polar opposite of grunge in every way you could ever imagine, besides both being heavy music. "Grungy" usually implies an emphasis on being dirty and imprecise, whereas Megadeth is a very technically advanced band.

Nevermore, Iced Earth, Black Label Society and Dream Theater.

All of which have been around for a fair few years, but they're out there and they're producing good music.

Breaking Benjamin and Alterbridge I guess. Maybe Three Days Grace? It depends on how you label them I guess...

Don't listen to Metallica, old or new, your guitar skill will deteriorate merely from listening to Kirk Hammets horrible soloing. Listen to Megadeth, Dream Theater, Van Halen, Ozzy, Racer X, Mr. Big, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force!

EDIT: Nevermore.
