To make a long story short, my entire life I never wanted my parents to give me something expensive. When I turned 15 I got a job and started working to buy everything I wanted and would never accept anything my parents offered to buy me. But I've always wanted to get a new computer, more specifically a laptop. My parents have been telling me for the past couples years that they'd buy me one for college but I always declined because "I didn't want to look rich and spoiled".

Then basically, my PC... broke (Long story) so I needed a new computer and decided that I'm better off getting a laptop so I could use it at home and take it with me. As had as it was for me to ask, I asked my parents if they could go half with me on a laptop. So we go to the mac store and I already know what I want, which was the 1300$ Mac, but my Mom forces me to buy the Mac book pro for 2000$ which kind hurts because I know I have to pay at least 1000$ of that.

Then as my we leave the store my Mom tells me that I don't have to pay anything because I haven't asked for anything expensive my entire life. Even though this was supposed to be one of those tender family care moments, it kind of pissed me off because I wanted to pay for some of it at least so I could tell people that I paid for half of it.

So anyways, should I just give into my pride and accept my gift or pay my parents back like I plan on doing?

I think your mum's just being nice to ya. They really wanna help you out by paying entirely for something, to make you happy. You should just accept it and enjoy the laptop m8.

You're too good for charity, eh? What? You think you're better than me? Well I say good day, sir!

If you havent asked your parents for anything that expensive your whole life you are not "spoiled", you should accept the gift with gratitude. Your mom is only trying to help you out a little bit.

It'll be hard but your mom is right. She's gotta feel like shit because you never except things from them. It's a gift and you should receive it that way. Say thank you and make sure they can see you enjoying it. Parents love that kinda stuff.

I am enjoying it, but I'm still going to pay them back at least 1000$ probably by the end of the month.

BTW there's a whole bunch of things I'm still ignorant to about this laptop so anything that I should know would help. For example, what the hell is bluetooth?

can anyone on ug actually think for themselves or for every little decision in their life do they have to post a thread

Bluetooth is a wireless connection. You can make ring tones and send them to your phone or hook up to other lap tops with bluetooth. It's ace.

bluetooth is a way of directly and wirelessly connecting two devices. The devices have to be relatively close to each other to connect. You can send music, video, and other files this way. Most common use is from a cell phone to a wireless headset or from computer to cellphone sending ringtones.

have fun with ur mac man. wish i had one! i love my notebook tho.

HighVoltage, that was unnecessary, and secondly - keep the gift, save up your money and do them something nice. Also note that doing them something nice doesn't have to be something expensive.

Yeah man, accept the gift, but with the money you've saved, buy something for them.

Dude... if your parents are willing to buy you a 2000 dollar mac, take it. Who cares if some tool thinks you're spoiled? Consider yourself lucky. Most kids who get nothing secretly wish their parents would buy them shit anyway.

maybe you should just try and repay the favor by making dinner and such, or helping more around the house and say its to put in your share of the laptop cost

well considering many kids going into college now have notebooks, i doubt anyone would ask if you paid for any of it.... i know a lot of kids who get them as graduation presents and such.... as for me, i'd probably keep it.... i do the same thing a lot as well, like telling my parents i'll pay for half an ipod or something for my bday and they just get it.... i usually insist on paying them back, but they don't accept it.... whatever though, life will go on if you pay for some of it or you don't

Yeah, man. I'd accept the gift. Make sure to give your parents a big hug I can understand why you want to pay for half though. It feels odd when you get something expensive and don't pay for it.
