I'm learning "Leave That Thing Alone" by Rush and if anybody could help me get that tone that Geddy gets I would greatly appreciate it. It sounds like new strings, some kinda distortion...help?

They are having that discussion on the comments for that video. To me, it definitely sounds like any run of the mill modern bass overdrive setup. A DigiTech Bass Driver does a very convincing impression of that sound; I should know, because I owned it.

I was looking at a used Warwick Vampyre LTD 5'er for about $200. I went home to grab my wallet and came back and some jerk with an epic beard got it already..

I'm fairly sure that he has 2 signals coming out of his bass, one distorted the other clean, which are mixed, which is what you hear.

From being a Rush freak, a good overdrive, distortion should give you the nice low end while still having the crunchy sound.

also, attacking teh strings very hard should also be of some help.
