These things are supposed to charge when hooked up to a computer via USB and are supposed to have an orange LED when charging.
Well when theyre hooked up, the LED flashes to indicate that the music can be edited. So how the hell does one get the damn thing to charge?

As long as it's hooked into the USB is should charge. You don't have to click "Charge, yo!" or anything. However, I think iTunes does have to be on the machine. At least, mine wont charge on the machines at work that don't have it.
