Ok, Im reading a TAB and it calls for picking over a string(dont know the actual term).

the tab reads like this:

----------------0-0--
-----6------6-------6
5---0-h5--5-----5--
0-----------------6--
----------------------
----------------------
(the alignment is off a bit)

so on the part where you pick e0 G5 D6 how do you skip over the B string? Do I just mute it or what? And if so, why doesnt it tell me to mute it? Ive been just finger picking it using my thumb, index, and middle fingers, but it feels kind of slow sloppy.

How do I do it with a pick?

obviously practice makes perfect...but I want to make sure Im doing it right before I commit to it.

thanks

btw the song is 'Old Man' by Neil Young off the album Harvest
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

that doesnt answer my question...

how can I practice something if I dont know what it is?

Are you sure theyre even using a pick? Could be fingerpicking...

If they ARE using a pick, just mute the string with a finger that youre not using.

Or a finger that you are using. I often let a finger that is fretting one string touch the string below it or above it to mute that one.

Why bother responding if thats the sum total of your advice?

I think it should look like this;

----------------0-0--
-----6------6-------6
5---0-h5--5-----5--
0-----------------6--
----------------------
----------------------

Which would indicate that it should be fingerpicked.

TS if you hold this chord shape and do a mixture of strumming and picking you should get it. Just play about with it for a while until it sounds good and in time. Watch out for the change in timing before the D chord.
