In case anyone does'nt know, the rock and roll hall of fame recently inducted Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. First of, WTF? ITS THE GODDAMN ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!!!

While most hip-hop/rap artists I do not like, there are some that I do, so don't take this as a solely anti hip-hop thread. I just don't understand this, that'd be like inducting babe ruth into the football hall of fame. Is the board behind the RRHF mentally retarded and possibley taking to many hits of something? All of the articles ive read on this do not say anything about how these hip-hop artists relate to rock and roll. When I went there artists that I was a little confused as to why they were inducted, but they had valid points on why they were. With this hip-hop stuff, all they say is that they were hip-hop pioneers? WTH does that have to do with rock?

Even the hip-hop people I know are confused. I know some guys that are into the local hip-hop scene and they had no idea why Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted. In one article i read it said that even Grandmaster Flash was confused!

Can anyone show me a reason behind this? When i went to the rock hall i pretty much thought it was a blasphemy against rock, but now this? Im really pissed off that they are calling this the rock and roll hall of fame, when it should be the popular music hall of fame, or just the music hall of fame. This just doesnt make any sense...

i think the reasoning behind it was that they influenced artists in many genres of music, including rock, but that still doesn't justify it completely in my opinion
#3
Listen to She's Fresh by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious 5 now. It's more rock 'n' roll than any modern rock band and Grandmaster Flash is a GOD
#4
good, i thought i was the only one pissed off they getting in

The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame ought to be treated like the joke it is. Every year, they ask us to broaden our definition of both rock 'n' roll and fame.
Death to Ovation haters!

lemme ask you this, does johnny cash sound much like rock n roll? hell no! johnny cash was country to the bone, but he was inducted because of his impact on the rock n roll genre. the same with grandmaster flash and the furious five. good for the rock n roll hall of fame on not being closed off elitists
#7
Its pretty easy to see how johnny cash influenced rock I actually like grandmaster flash & the furious five but i cant see how they should be inducted. just because they have a few rock songs does not make them a ROCK band, otherwise we would be inducting just about everyone who was eligible.

if thats true then they can make their own hall of fame, its not like Nu-metal and emo that are the current trend of rock, its a completley different genre

Hip Hop is the new Rock and Roll

Liar! Liar! Why must you lie?!?!

*ahem*

Yeah, I think the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame needs to stop kissing up to other genres, and stick to what it's named for. Although I must agree, the guitar work in some old school songs can be pretty sick sometimes. One of my favourite songs is "Tougher than Leather" by Run-DMC, and that has a few rock guitar solos in it.

personally i thing hip-hop is the downfall of todays music, but c'mon, you have to like grandmaster flash
*sob* i couldn't think of anything to put here*sob*
#12
LOL, what? Even Grandmaster was confused?

From what I've heard, it's a joke anyways.. but yeah, that's weird.

I said this when the list of inductees went up.

EDIT: What the hell. How did the Beegees get in?
"That Hidde's a cool guy" -Abe Lincoln
"Hidde? Yeah we jam all the time" -Steve Vai
"Remember that time when burt jumped out of the tree and into the river? Good times!" -Jesus

So I heard you liek profiles?

some rock was influneced by hip-hop, like RATM and some nu-metal, and even some alt/indie

#15
lolol, obviously the Rock n' Roll hall of fame is just run by the industry. Probably some hip hop crap got inducted before bands such as Black Sabbath were.

Yea i really don't get that either. I mean it DOES say Rock n' Roll hall of fame. Why not just make a Hip-Hop hall of fame instead of doing this?

I think that Grandmaster Flash deserves it. Maybe not at this point in time considering many bands that have been passed up. Some artists pass beyond genres and they deserved to be recognized. I'd even say the same for the Beastie Boys with how they could mix hip-hop and rock. It's molding what they have and there's no specific name for it.

Stop being a close minded douche.

Grandmaster Flash owns
And especially the Furious Five.

He's not being close-minded

if it says ''rock n roll'' hip hop does NOT belong in there, no matter how open minded you are, im sorry but its just... not.. this is just not acceptable, what a joke.

by the way... i was watchin pick of destiny... do they really have a section called ''gods of guitar'' ? with the famous guitars ? like from angus, zakk, randy etc, cuz THATS ****in AWESOME!!!!!!!!

( watch somebody like hawthorne heights or some other emo/pop punk artist get a guitar spot right up there with randy... )

Well, if we want to be technical, no band past the late 60's should be in it considering the term was coined in the 50's. Many people today wouldn't even consider that stuff back then rock, just pop and country.

Rock and Roll has obviously evolved into many different genres, so ya have to take it into consideration.
#21
First you have to understand the origin of the term "Rock 'n Roll" (If I remember my classes right....)

Anyways back when jazz, blues, swing, and big band music were big, another form of music was starting to emerge from artists such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry, so on and so forth. Anyways, because it wasn't socially allowed for white DJs to play music from a black artists, you had a bunch of stale white guys (Pat Boone :mad covering the songs that the black artists played. The music the black artists played was called Rhythm and Blues (R&B) and Rock and Roll was the term for the "white music".

Anyways, long story short, Grandmaster Flash can technically be part of rock and roll.

I like rap and I like rock, but the "RnR Hall of Fame" is just...I cant even express my disdain in words. It's a joke, a lame schmaltzy kiss-ass joke. Any cool artist should do what the Sex Pistols did if they're inducted - tell them to f*uck off with their lame VH1y commercialism.

Side note: I think it says a lot that Gene Simmons was complaining about KISS not being inducted. Douche.

Rock and Roll and R&B are fundamentally the same damn thing. So any sub genre that came off of either R&B or Rock N Roll can be entitled to be in the Rock N Roll hall of fame

^Yes, but hip-hop, even it's earliest forms, is far removed from R&B and Rock'n'roll. It's roots lie more in Jamaican toasting, and jazz scat, than anywhere else.

Their label of "Rock N' Roll" isn't just music with guitars. Rather, by "Rock N' Roll", they're referring to popular music in the Western world.

Well, if you count it on "...stick to what it's named for", then in about 5-10 years, no one else can be inducted.

Nothing is "rock n' roll" anymore. The closest thing we have no is some of the more independent artists, and SOME mainstream artists worth calling rock n' roll. Everything is a cross-genre now. RHCP even isn't straight-forward rock, they have strong funk influence. They shouldn't have inducted any metal, because metal isn't EXACTLY rock, it is it's own entity.

So, they kinda HAVE to broaden their sights, or no one's going to be inducted anymore.

Wouldn't that make Frank Sinatra, Mozart and Billie Holliday all rock'n'roll?

Yeah, but I mean.... if they want to randomly induct artists from all genres, they should change their names. But ffs, they're a joke! Black Sabbath only just got inducted LAST YEAR? DEEP PURPLE AREN'T INDUCTED AT ALL?

No to Frank Sinatra, he was before the Rock and Roll thing (movement, craze, whatever), I'm pretty sure he was against rock and roll to begin with.

Billie Holiday, probly

Hey, its not up to me who gets inducted. I'm not even sure what you have to do in order to be inducted (I think you have to remain a successful band for 35 years... not sure, but its been a while since I last checked). I'm just making a guess at why and how certain bands got inducted.

Gaaah, bastardization of the word Rock'n'Roll... in all honesty, doesn't it apply only to the 50s stuff, the Johnny B Goode Rock around the Clock stuff?

I mean, the term for popular modern music is..... POP.

These days it's thrown around as an insult, but in fact it shouldn't be.

I think the Hall of Fame is a freaking joke. How the **** can you induct Grandmaster Flash into a Rock'n'Roll but not Deep freaking Purple? Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against Flash, but... he's not rock.

It probly is, it's been about 10-15 years since I actually cared about the Hall of Fame and even then I didn't pay much attention to it.

honestly i think Grandmaster Flash deserves to be there more than some other people that have been inducted.

EDIT:
hell even Miles Davis is in there, and he certainly isnt Rock'n'Roll. although he was a great musician.

That's the thing - if you're gonna call yourself the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, focus on Rock'n'Roll.

It's like saying you're a pizzeria, and you only have a few types of pizza available, but you also do hamburgers, kebab, and Chinese.

maybe theyre just running out of ideas.

i agree that only rock should be allowed in. i mean obviously, even though i like Grandmaster Flash, its obviously not what should be in the rock and roll hall of fame.
