Basically, me and a friend are thinking of building a guitar/guitars, but we're pretty new to it, not the actual crafting side of things, but the specialised things involved with guitars specifically.
The main question we were wondering, is what options do we have for woods? We're planning to build a solid body electric guitar, and we don't know what type of wood to use for the body. What woods are there, and what are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

well, if you're gonna make a fender, they are mostly made of alder or ash for the body.
for the neck it's always made of maple, and the fretboard is made out of rosewood or maple.
rosewood sounds warmer, and the maple will sound a bit brighter.

if you're gonna make a les paul, the i would use maple for the top, and mahogany for the back and neck.

for shaped parts, this site is good : http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/guitars.cfm

and for laquer & stuff this is good : http://reranch.com/

and for drawings and stuff for guitar i recommend this : http://www.guitarbuild.com/modules/mydownloads/

hope I helped
