i know this is probably not the right spot to post this but i was playing my lotus strat a couple of minutes ago and i was adjusting the volume when all of the sudden i started picking up the sound from some christian TV channel. has anybody had this happen or ever heard of this happening before. it was coming through my amp as clear as if i had the tv on. and there was no tv on in the house that had that on there.

Yeah that's the FCC compliance thing, it has to pick up interference. I shouldn't hurt any thing.

It's probably not TV, but radio.
If your guitar cable is not good enough shielded or is an old cable your guitar and cable will act as an antenna.

I get some russian radio all the time with my crappy old cable. It's quite fun some times, it sounds like some of the guys talking with the prof. in the original Hitman: CN 47.

^ it will always pick up the ringer from your cell because of magnetic disturbence (just like the hum when you get close to a TV or monitor), but never actually get the conversation, because the signal is on a much higher frequency and nowadays it's also digital.
Even if you had an really old cell, which used analog signals, you'd never actually hear anything, cause the signal operates at somewhere around 900MHz, which is way above the AM/FM signal your guitar might pickup.

Sorry about the educational bit there...

FCC compliance places a limit on the interference an electronic item should emit, not force items to recieve a certain amount of interference.

That never happened to me before

My guess is that it's probably some low-budget TV-transmission broadcasting on a low frequency.

Or it might be that one/some of your neighbours has a hearing-line around their house. I don't know the correct english term for it, but it's basically a line around the house broadcasting the sound from the currently selected TV-channel so that people with hearing-aids can get the sound directly into their aid. It's quite common here in Norway.
It broadcasts at a lower frequency that TV and it's more likely.

I had a cheap 15 watt that beeped whenever you changed the channel or volume with the remote. My TV also picks up radio signals from some country stationm if you mute it or turn it down really low, it comes through. It's wierd.

yeah on my amp whenever i press the overdrive button it picks up some top 100 radio station, its really annoying. It doesnt surprise me tho,my amps's a piece of sh*t ,lol.
#13
If you point a remote control at your pickups and push the buttons you get beeping and clicks due to the Electromagnetic disturbance, pretty quiet though.

yeah i had a crappy amp that picked up some kind of radio/tv signals before. i've only had the amp do it a couple of times, though

your amp has a screen?
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

^ maybe they're just shielded better or something.

That was a joke about the screen, lol, my guess is it's radio signals. mine does it too sometimes when you really crank the gain/volume.

my tele picks up my ringtone too :P

i don't see why it wouldn't though, because speakers produce sound in pretty much the same way an electric guitar picks up string movement, except in reverse.

My guitar has picked up noises from toy guns that me and my former bandmates got at the dollar store earlier that day. It sounded pretty sweet, and we ended up using it for this little part in one of our songs. Sadly, we never got to record that song.

My dad used to go to go to a recording studio that had tried really hard to shield everything from radio interfearence, and not just their connections and individual devices either, they had a full metal cage bricked into the walls. Even so, there was one taxi company who's broadcasts they would occasionally pick up, they'd be in the middle or recording a voice over and they'd suddenly start hearing cabbies arguing with depatch. It never happened consistently enough for them to pinpoint what was picking it up. Became a running joke in the local Film and TV industry.

I asked around on stratocaster interference on the customisation forum a while back, and the gurus opened my eyes on shielding. Original thread is https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=506419&page=2&pp=20

Apparently strats in particular pick up all kinds of electrical and radio crap because of their design. Here's what Mr Hankey gave me about shielding
