On all the "classic" albums.. like Moonflower, Abraxis, Lotus, etc.. he used Mesa Mark's (I believe it was Mark I's..).. on his really really old albums though I think he used Fenders.. either way he uses Dual Rectifiers and Lonestars now..

Kinda mixed up, but thats a general idea amp wise...

Yeah, in terms of guitars he most often uses his PRS Santana signature. For his tone, you more or less have to boost the mids a bit, roll the guitar tone back a bit, and make for a warmth thick sound with a bit of edge.
Why did Pat Metheney cross the road? He didn't, his hair got in the way

He probably has the most unique and recognizable tone in all of rock history. If you go about buyin a PRS and a Mesa Mark, you have some pretty big shoes to fill.

For a good example of what the PRS Sig and Mark would give you, just listen to Hope you're feeling better off of Abraxas.

i'm pretty sure he had his own sig. yamaha guitar back in his early days.

but anyways, a mesa amplifier and a prs will get you started

For the first few albums he used a Gibson SG with soapbars. Then somewhere after his third album he swapped to a Yamaha SG with humbuckers. Then later on he switched to the PRS.

Also with his amps, he cranked them. Recently he switched to dumbles, and he said the reason is that you don't have to crank them (unlike the Mesas) to get good tone.

But yeah, really boost the mids. Neck pickup, maybe roll some tone off your guitar to suit.
