Ok, I have a MIM J-Bass and I think the tone is too thin. It just can't get heavy enough. I want to put a Music Man HB where the bridge one is. I know I have to get it routed and stuff, I'm concerened with pole spacing and pickup height. Making sure it sits like the original. I measured and I know I have room. Any comments?

Doesn't Music Man (anything) suck? Or is that a different brand.

No,Music Man are very high quality,I think that OLP's are the bad ones.

Don't do it!!!

Get some Dimarzio Ultra Jazzes, or some SD stacks. One of those stacked humbuckers in the bridge position will sound kinda similar to a Stingray. But either way, if you want the proper stingray tone, you NEED the preamp(preferably a stingray one)

A good preamp in general on its own should make the tone heavier anyway.

I recommend an Audere:

at $150 what can go wrong?

Get active J pickups, and an active preamp/3 band EQ. Or you could just go for the preamp/3 band EQ.

The stingray pickups are active, am I right?

I believe so. I think they make a passive version.

Or they're passive, but they make an active version.

Ok, so I can get a stacked pup like a hot-rails only for bass? What's a preamp, does that have to be installed or is it like a pedal?

Pretty much.

Preamps are kinda like the EQ knobs on the amp, as there's Bass, Mid, and High pots, as well Balance and Volume.

And it's on the bass itself.

Nope, OLP are excellent licenced copies.

/\/\ I'm planning on buying an OLP lefty myself. They have the Stingray growl without the Stingray wallet destroying qualities.
