if you didnt want two notes to sound why would you trill them?

do u place the finger that holds the note on the fret while hammering on and pulling off the same fret?

Practise slow. (which you shouldn't) mute the other strings for a while. Practise slow, and go for accuracy. I don't get any open strings sounding unless i get overly tired. At which point i'd stop.

It would be pointless to to trill on the same fret. If you want to get different sounds from the same note, just bend your strings back and forth in a continuous motion for a vibrato effect. That's the best answer I can think of.

lets say in a tab it says to trill the 8th fret on the high e string what would i do

Say for example you are trilling between the 2nd fret and the 3rd fret, you hold your finger on the 2nd fret the whole time, while you do a hammer on and pull off with your other finger on the 3rd fret. is that what your asking?

Edit: okay i think i didnt answer your question properly, but your question doesnt make sense.

Edit2: A trill has to be with 2 notes.

Ialways thought a trill had to be between 2 notes but what if it says 8 in a tab with a trill sign over it, what do i do. I trill between the 8th fret and what?

Then it's probably not a trill...either it's tabbed wrong or you're misinterpreting it.

If it's an 8 with a squiggily line afterwards, then it's telling you to perform vibrato on the note.

Probably vibrato, as said above, but if you want the same not to sound repeatedly then tremolo pick it.

It sounds to be like your either misinterpreting the tab or the tab is wrong. Normally a trill is shown like this in a tab

Main riff
Eb|----------------------------------------------------------------|
Bb|----------------------------------------------------------------|
Gb|----------9~---8~---7---6-5~-------------9~---8~---7---5tr6-----|
Db|-----9-10----9----8---7-------------9-10----9----8---7----------|
Ab|---7------------------------------7-----------------------------|
Eb|-0------------------------------0-------------------------------|

With tr representing a trill between the 5th and 6th fret on the G string. If there is a ~ after something it means to use vibrato.

Sometimes you may see something like this in a tab

   4x 4x 3x
   t p t p t p t p t p t p t p t p
E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---9-5-2-9-5-2----10-5-2-10-5-2---10-7-4-10-7-4-----12-7-4--12-7-4-----------
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The T above the tab means that that note is tapped

Hopefully this clears up any misunderstandings you may have. If not post the section of the tab you're having problems with and I’ll try to help.
