I really want to know if there are any effects pedals that will get you Zakk's Tone without having to spend a couple of $1,000 for gear. Is his gear made special to get that tone? I know that his JCM 800 amps are moded, I have heard that getting his EMG set of pickups help out alot. Do you have to have an Amp with lots of Distortion and Gain?
Just Wondering.

Well it's only an OD. If you have a Squier Strat Pack, it's not gonna sound like him. If you have a Les Paul with EMGs and a JCM 800, then it will. Basically, you need similar or the same gear to get his tone.

His JCM800's aren't modded, he just puts Groove Tube 6550R's in them.
His cabinets have signature BLS speakers in them (I forgot the company that makes them), and of course he has his signature overdrive and wah pedals (I have them both, they're great).
I've managed to get my tone very close to his using my DSL401 on the OD1 channel, plus of course I have all of his pedals.
The overdrive pedal isn't gonna help you get his tone unless you have a proper tube amp, it'll really sound like crap on any solid-state.

Here's how I get his tone:
Of course, a Gibson Les Paul with EMG's
Marshall DSL401 with these settings:
Gain: 10
Bass: 10
Treble: 4-6
Mid: 4-6
Master volume: AT LEAST 5.
Overdrive pedal: Full blast

That oughta do it

See, that's what you need to do to get his tone. Les Paul + EMGs + signature pedals + all-tube Marshall. Anything else just won't work.

he also uses a lee jackson pre amp so good luck with finding his tone. but really you should just find your own tone.

i forgot to mention something about zakks tones. the key way to achieve it, is to have a beard like zakk wylde and drink lots of beer

What's this Lee Jackson pre-amp? I know Zakk's rig back and forth and I've never heard of it. Is it rack-based? Cause I know the only thing Zakk has in his rack is a Korg digital tuner.

No, he used to use a Jackson-designed Ampeg but that was back in the 80's.

Nope, the SD1 > Wylde OD...... sorry man.... but the Wylde OD I tried with a Carvin Legacy was just........raspy...

I thought Zakk added a preamp tube to his amp for further preamp gain..... oh yeah, does he use his OD as a solo boost, or as an all-around boost to boost everything ??
Tone is all ...... well probably 75%, in your fingers.
The rest depends on your wallet's thickness !!

Keep the faith, baby!!
#26
He uses it as an all-around boost, it's always on. He only turns it off when he's playing clean, and then he rolls down the volume on his guitar.
